Let's Talk Celestions

OK. I have this no-name 4x12 cab, I think it was a Sonic. It has some Celestions that I have never heard of in it. They are made in England but they don't seem like anything great. I also have a Marshall 1936 2x12 cab with Carvin speakers in it (weird, huh?). I use the 4x12 for my JCM 900 50w head and I use the 2x12 for my Fender Blues Jr.

It's time for new speakers.

I want vintage tone. Led Zeppelin, dirty blues, raw. You know, MARSHALL tone. My brain says I just need Greenbacks. I could be down with that but then I Think about Vintage 30s. How well do these mix? Would it make sense to mix them? Maybe 3 greens and a 30 in the 2x12 and one of each in the 2x12? Maybe all greens in the 4x12 and 30s in the 2x12. What do you think?

I am looking at Avatar to buy the speakers. Anyone know anyplace better?

Rock on.

Re: Let's Talk Celestions

V30's work best when mixed with the G12H30. A V30 and a H30 in a 2x12 is a proven combonation. Greens are THE classic 4x12 speaker for blues/rock.

On Celestion speakers, you should find a four digit set of numbers just after the letter T on the frame. This set of numbers identifies the speaker. Someone here might know the number set.

Avatar is a good a place as any to buy speakers from, although they will not ship outside of the states. I've had good experiances, and have heard nothing but good things from others.

Re: Let's Talk Celestions

What are the Celestions in the cab now?

As for a good mix, try the H30 and V30 mix...

If I were you I'd go with different set ups in each cab...

Re: Let's Talk Celestions

Vin 30's are supposed to be higher wattage greenbacks. I would used 2 Vin30's and 2 GH12 speakers- the mix that avatar suggests...

Re: Let's Talk Celestions

Vin 30's! I tried the highly recommended G12H30/Vin 30 mix. The G12H30 had a super sharp high end that I couldn't smooth out. Took them out. Love the straight Vin 30's. High power handling and vintage flavor.

V30's were originally developed as a ceramic magnet, higher wattage alternative to Alnico G12's. They are closer to the Blue.

The GB's are a little different. I find GB's have more bite and crunch, although they are not quite as loud. V30's have more bass, and tighter bass, with strong mids.

GB's still have a fairly solid bass in a closed back 4x12 cab though.

Re: Let's Talk Celestions

I think that I have been convinced. Greenbacks in the 4x12 and V30s in the 2x12. I am very excited.

Also, the Celestions that are in the cab at the moment are G12s-50.

Rock on.
