Let's talk pedals

Just bought a used BOSS Metal Zone MT-2 DISTORTION PEDAL for $40.00. What do you think of this pedal and / or what distortion boxes do you like that don't cost an "arm and a leg" (I need both arms to play and, well, two legs are nice to stand on). BTW, I don't see a forum for boxes so I figured this was the next best thing.

Re: Let's talk pedals

Posts related to pedals go in the amplifier section. And people think we don't need a pedal section... lol

Typically this is what the MT2 is like

I'm not from the US, but I've been reliably informed that Guitar centre is full of teenagers playing with precisely the tone the MT2 will give you.

Re: Let's talk pedals

I know guys who swear by MT-2s. I personally think they have their place, but wouldn't be caught dead with one on my board. If you're after a thick, gritty, semi - versatile distortion for bedroom playing, it'll do the job.

Re: Let's talk pedals

I owned one or two of them over the years, but since the last one I've been convinced it's not a sound I'm likely to seek out again.

Re: Let's talk pedals

I also know guys who swear by MT-2s. But they have ridiculously bad, pretty much laughably bad tone.

It is bar none, the worst and simultaneously, one of the most popular metal-oriented distortion pedals ever. Why? Because it sounds great for when you're alone in your bedroom and it sounds brooooootal with it's complete lack of mids and shrill high end and boomy bass. But take that onto a stage where you need a tight low end, lots of mids and a smooth high end, and you begin to sound laughably bad.It has about as much character and soul as some trout fins frozen in a block of ice.

You could try to EQ it differently, but for some reason, everyone I've ever seen with an MT-2 doesn't EQ it differently than what I described.

Just horrible. pawn it and get anything else. (except the MXR Fulbore distortion - it's also a mess, but it's more just a horrible character of distortion rather than piss-poor EQing and lifeless tone)

Re: Let's talk pedals

its not the best but it has its place and is definitely more usable than people would have you believe. i have found the hardwire tl2 pedal is an absolute metal zone killer though. has the same 4 band eq but sounds way fuller and can be had quite cheap. i got mine for $10!

Re: Let's talk pedals

I use an MXR Custom Baddass 78 Distortion. Probably $80 new. Sounds great though. Real Marshall grit.

Re: Let's talk pedals

For what its worth, Monty Allums has a mod for this. I haven't done it myself, but I have listened to the clips. The clips are worth downloading and listening to . . . for free.

A "brown" sound?

Re: Let's talk pedals

The EQ on the metal zone is surprisingly effective, but very touchy about exactly what position the pots are in. It has a few usable sounds in there, but you really need to work with the pedal to find them.

Re: Let's talk pedals

I would not bother modding it. Just use it for what its good for. Bedroom level chunk. I keep one around just for this use. Any louder than conversation level and it sounds like ass but for late night apartment chugga chuga chugga jamming it works very well.

Re: Let's talk pedals

The Keeley mod puts the tone back in the pedal. It's worth every penny.

Its a matter of opinion really... In my mind the 75 bucks for the mod could be used for a better pedal that doesnt need to be modded. But hey if it blows your skirt up have at it.

Re: Let's talk pedals

Co-guitar player was playing through one the other night. I HATED it.

That said - it's got some sporty EQ. Easy on the gain and set the knobs right, I'm sure you can get a usable sound from it. There is a time/place for every dirt box. Sometimes you just don't know when / where that is!
