I'm really not much of a guitar tech. Can you guys give me some info on how these wrok, why they would be prefered and what other items/parts/tools are needed to make them work if any?

Re: Let's talk preamps...

it's not clear exactly what you are talking about ... in the most general case, a guitar preamp is a device that takes the very small signal out of a guitar's pickups and provides gain and tone-shaping (EQ) of the signal ...

are you talking about a preamp that is "on-board" the guitar?

or are you talking about a rack mounted preamp unit?

or a preamp pedal in front of an amp?

you have to ask better questions if you want better answers

Sorry, I thought rack mounted preamps were implied. Im lookingat a tube amp and saw this as a new option and would just like some more info on it. Like if I bought a Hot Rod Deluxe, could I get a high gain rackmount or pedal pre amp to get killer distortion?

You could, but you'd probably be better off with a DS1 or something. Preamps don't always sound good going into another preamp either. I don't know much about the Hotrod, but i guess you could put it through the effects loop if it has one.
