Lets talk straplocks a moment..

First, I normally use Dunlops. Have them on most of my guitars. I like how Schaller has the "cup" backup, but started using Dunlop as I didnt like the way the pin sticks out on Schallers. Anyhow... I DO have some Schallers in use as well. Considering getting a set of locks for one axe that is still lockless....Since I have a strap with Schaller parts already from a guitar I sold with the buttons intact, Im considering a Schaller set.

I see there are different types. So, questions..

1)Are Fender Schaller straplocks the same? I assume so as they are made by Schaller and prolly just come in Fender packaging.

2)Reverb and Ebay are full of Schaller Style locks.. Any luck with those? Im leary as I dont want to risk the guitars safety to save a few bux

3)I see some labeled Schaller and some labeled Schaller 445 or 447 etc. Any difference? Im guessing the number designates the color?

4)Lastly, any negatives going with Schaller as opposed to Dunlop? I know from previous threads, alot of you use Schaller.

Thanks

I started with Schallers, but had a set fail and switched to Dunlops. Zero problems in the 16 years since.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I saw Jeff Beck using Grolsch beer top sealers. That's good enough for me.grolsch.jpg

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Ive heard of the Grolsh sealers before.. Thought to myself, thats more enjoyable getting those then ordering them too. haha

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Not crazy about most straplocks... too bulky for my tastes. I use the elliptical buttons and turn them so that the wide part is perpendicular to the strap's direction when I'm wearing the guitar. Never had a problem. :dunno:

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I use Dunlops - but I have one set of Schallers awaiting installation.

I have used DiMarzio clip locks once, but hated the look and the floppy ends stuck on the guitar.

I have one with some funky turning end that clamps the pin hole on the tag shut too.

I actually have a couple of guitars without any. The pin/strap situation is fine sometimes.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Yeah, it actually seems like the real issue is strap hole wear rather than the type of pin or lock.

Agreed. I usually only use straplocks if the guitar is over 7 lbs.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I love my DiMarzio Cliplocks. Super secure and especially with a flying V where one pin is towards you it's great to have a very flat mount to the body like the dimarzios have.

Those are a cool concept, and I thought about one for my BC Rich Perfect 10 Bich (both strap buttons on the back), but I like the look of wide leather straps better so I opted out.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I'm a big Schaller fan. I'm not sure how they could fail. Prior to that I used Dunlop and DiMarzio.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I don't use anything less than DiMarzios with a dab of wood glue

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I've used Dunlops and Schallers. They can both have problems if they're not installed properly.

The hex nut on the Schaller has to be tight enough that it won't come loose. Some people put thread-lock on it. It's possible for the spring-loaded plunger not to engage the recess in the button every time, so I always install them so that the bell-shaped part on the strap cups the button from underneath. Light machine oil is probably a good idea. And of course, you have to make sure the button screws are solid.

With Dunlops you really have to make sure the lock washer snaps in place in that little grove. Always make sure the plunger springs back up and forces the ball bearings in place down inside the shaft. It's probably a good idea to use some light machine oil on it. Just like with any other strap locks, you have to make sure those button screws are planted.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

One thing it that might be of interest to mention is that if you buy an expensive form fitting case, like I did, you may discover , as I did-and much to my dismay, its that you can't really fit a guitar with a strap in it, much much less with Straplocks.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

At the very least I've found that guitars will seldom go gracefully into a case with the strap on. Secure and quick-release are certainly in order.

I've had these on my guitars for years now, and have never had any problems.
