Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I've had these on my guitars for years now, and have never had any problems.

I use something similar. I found some clips about a decade ago that were nothing more than a single piece of plastic cut in to a C shape.

They work remarkably well, haven't had a problem since I started using them. I even have an old strap with a button slot stretched larger than your mother's, and have not had a problem with that strap since. I'll try to find a picture if anyone is interested.

IMO, Schaller and Dunlop are bulky and overkill. The ones pictured above are perfectly adequate for most applications.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I had an Ibanez J-Custom that had recessed Dunlop style straplocks which was very cool, but other than that I like the Schallers better. The Dunlops move the strap farther away the body which, to me, as a mechanical designer, puts more stress on the screw in the wood because it moves the lever arm (but I'm probably overthinking that anyway). So, when I used straplocks, I normally used Schallers or DiMarzio cliplocks, now I don't use any and I haven't had any issues. Of course, I'm not jumping or running around anymore either, but I've honestly only had one guitar fall (years ago) and that was my fault from not putting the strap all the way over the button. I'm with Bri, the biggest problem is the holes in the strap getting worn out an sloppy, so if you take your straps on and off a lot, locks are a good idea. I usually just leave the straps on and put the guitar I'm going to use in a gig bag with it on.

One of my guitars has Planet Wave rotating elliptical end pins on it which seem pretty nice, but I honestly never use the rotating/locking feature - http://daddario.com/pwProductDetail...d=751&productname=Rotating_Elliptical_End_Pin

I can also honestly say I've never tried to spin a guitar, even back in the 80s, but if you are going full on Malmsteen, I would go with the DMZ cliplocks, the straps are pretty slick too which seems like it would help reduce spin friction.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

i use schaller strap locks, dunlop straploks and lok strap, and the grolsch tops. as long as there is something on there, im not worried. my favorite are the recessed dunlops but i only have those on one of my homemade guitars

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I second this. I've used these with vintage-style Fender strap buttons for many, many gigs over years and years, and have never had a single problem whatsoever. And I am usually on a wireless when I play, I run around and climb on all kinds of stuff. Cheap + totally reliable = :bigthumb::bigthumb:

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I use Schallers on all of my guitars...never any problems. I double check them at every string change, and use Lock-Tite on the hex nuts (or white glue, really). I never had one fail, unless I failed to check them once in awhile. The plastic discs above have exploded on me on a dark stage, and good luck finding the inner disc in the darkness.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I've used Dunlops since I started playing 18 years ago. Zero failures. :)

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I've used Dunlops for years
Only trouble of note is that some years ago, I sold my Carvin bass to a friend
Who left it on a guitar stand and his dog wee'd on it.
This caused the endpin straplock to lock up and not to release
Maybe it wasn't the dog wee, wee don't know

But it is the only failure I have ever seen on any Dunlop

On a slightly different subject

I have an acoustic Yamaha that I would like to put locks on
But one pin is on the neck heel and the other doubles as the jack
Would you just mount another next to the jack?
Which way is the proper way for the neck heel pin? Strap face in or out?

Sorry for the hijack

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Schallers on everything, except 335's and SG that connect at the heel. On those, the straps are permanently connected with a steel washer at the heel, and a Grolsch bottle seal at the butt end.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I have had a Dunlop failed once, luckily I catched the guitar. I like Planet Waves locking strap, no installation required.

The Schaller is actually safer cause it has a harness where the strap button still rests in case the unit gets unlocked accidentally, as long as the harness faces upward. With the Dunlop if it gets unlocked accidentally, game over.

I've never had a Dunlop fail once properly locked; I always tug on the strap after attaching and it'll come off then if it's going to. My Schaller failure happened in part because the "harness" rotated while I was playing.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Been using the DiMarzio cliplocks since 2011 and love them, you can switch straps between guitars and they will never fall off as the ends are screwed into the body of the guitar. Now I can perform in confidence knowing I can swing my guitar round like a lunatic and not have to worry about it flying off. I have them on all my electric guitars and I've even put a set on a bass I sometimes use when I fill in for my friend's metalcore band, did a show on Saturday and wouldn't have felt secure without one! They're super easy to install as well, less than 60 seconds, remove original strap button, insert DiMarzio one (longer screw for added security) with bushings and the ends, clip the strap in and you're all good.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I've used Dunlop since I started out. The draw for me has been the very positive locking mechanism (like someone else said, you just pull on it after inserting the strap and if it's going to come off at all, it will then), and also the big standard-style button the system has, which allows you to use a strap without any locking posts installed if you wish. It also works really well for those acoustic-style 2-part leather straps that have two holes on the butt side of the strap for fast length adjustment; you set the strap up to give you a comfortable playing position using either of the holes (I go for a comfortable sitting vs standing-style setup), then install the lock on the lower/longer strap hole, and then if you're using the top hole, you put that on the button and just curl the end of the strap around and plug it in. Try that with your Schallers.

The only downside I've experienced is getting these things on the strap so that they don't rattle; with the one-size-doesn't-quite-fit-all setup of the washer and locking ring design, I usually need spacers, and for that I usually find an old cereal box, use the washer to trace out a few circles on the heavy card, then cut them out and use as necessary to add a little pressure on the inside washer so it doesn't rattle as the guitar resonates.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Schallers

Lately a lot of my guitars I've stoped using them. Got pins that work well so....

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Thanks for the input!! Ive primarily always used Dunlops as I didnt like how the knob of the schallers protrudes. And yes, always double checked that it's clicked in. nearly dropped one once cuz I didnt have it secured. and, aside from the first set I got, Ive always bought to dual designed so I have the regular pin too. But, for some reason I tried Schallers on a guitar once (think they were easier to get at that time) and I like that that they have the cup in case the pin fails. I need locks for a guit and was looking for input. I have a strap that already has Dunlop locks on it, belonged to a guitar I sold with the pins intact, and was able to find a place online that sells just the pins, so ordered those.. Ive tried some other brands in the past too, but will stick with either Dunlop or Schaller.

I have had a couple of guits with the pins sunk in. That is cool as heck cuz the straps mount flush.. Since I sweat alot, they can get alil rusty, so put a dab of wd40 on em to keep em functional.

Someone asked about an accoustic. No prob on the hijack.. Id also like to know. I have the same thing on my accoustics and use regular straps as I dont know of any other solution other than adding another button for the locks and I dont want to do that. So, I may try the grolsh (sp?) bottle method or something to lock the strap on the stock pins. In the meantime, I use a strap with stiffer tabs and tighter holes and make sure its on good

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

well this stinks... not only is my fav beer not sold in this part of the state, (Lowenbrau) but no one round here carries Grolsch either...

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

2)Reverb and Ebay are full of Schaller Style locks.. Any luck with those? Im leary as I dont want to risk the guitars safety to save a few bux
yeah. nah.
not as good. they catch and are generally annoying. They are also slightly different to real schallers, so using a schaller lock on a knock off button (or vice versa) is annoying and you have to fumble with it to get the strap off. Crappy. Not worth saving a few bucks. Get the real ones.

I much prefer schallers to dunlops, but that is only personal pref. I have both.
Don't know about those numbers tho...446 or 447 etc. I just bought a new set coincidentally and looking at the packaging there is no mention of a number. It just says "schaller security locks".
Last thing...one small issue with schallers is that the nut needs to be tight or it can potentially unscrew. I just crank em up and add a drop of clear nail polish so they lock. Job done.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

What if you don't have clear nail polish?

Will Fantasy Metallic Purple work?
