Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

Bearing in mind I've never tried a Kahler, my favorites are the original Ibanez Edge and Edge Lo-Pro, and the OFR.

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

So far I liked the OFR, and whatever trem is on the ibanez s420 (think it was a ZR trem).

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

My favourite vibrato bridges are the Kahler Pro flatmount, PRS and an early Wilkinson VS100. The type that I use most frequently is Leo's six-point synchronised misnomer.

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

I'm a big fan of Leo Fender's Dual Fulcrum Vibrato on G&Ls. I've played with guys who used Floyds and Kahlers, and the DFV would stay in tune better than any of them.

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

For me, OFR >Kahler >Wilkinson VS-100/VS-50 > everything else. That´s may preference when considering a new trem. I currently USE all of the above as well as vintage style trems and 2 or 3 styles of floyd copy, notable Jackson`sJT-6 and the Ibanezez Edge series. All of them stay in tune PERFECTLY. And none of them are blocked /dive only. Particularly the Vilkinson VS-100/VS-50 is out of the box one of THE best vintage style trems I`ve seen come to market in the last 20-25 years.

The bottom line is that ANY trem that is not physically damaged or truly defective (Worn knife edges, crushed bearings, hairline crasks, stripped threads...) can be made to hold it`s tuning properly, even the cheapest POS chinese pot metal jobbies for 3$ wholesale. If it can`t be made to stay perfectly in tune, then whowever is setting it up isn`t worth being paid to do so. Period.

Case in point, the brand new, high quality Hipshot even has a tremsetter, and STILL has problems returning to zero. That means either the nut is too tight, too deep, or the trem and /or tremsetter flat out aren`t set up properly. I suspect too much grease on the tremsetter rod is causing your current problem. Possibly a small amount of nut binding compounding it, especially if youre using the same guage of strings that you were using when it had the Wilkinson which had the same problem from what I understand, "just bigger".

IIRC this is not the first time I`ve suspected your tech to be sub par judging the evidence as presented, and I really think you should at least be taking a look at who else is out there. The fact of the matter is that it doesn`t jack **** of good for you if everybody constantly says how great he is and you continue to consistently get all of his Monday Morning defects. :beerchug:

Each time these threads come up I read about issues that with 99.9% certainity can really only be general setup issues, and how your primary reponse is usually that your tech is top notch and others say so too... I can understand that, but that doesn`t change that I and others also have decades of experience, combined I`d say the forum has well over a century of collective, unique experience, and even those of us that don`t consider themselves professionals are telling you your tech may not be what he`s cracked up to be. If that`d not a sign to at least be more critical, I`m not sure what is.

I mean, If I can tell instantly you your tremsetter and/or nut are off without ever seeing, hearing or feeling the guitar (and I still think it`s primarily the nut), and somebody else can`t solve those issues with the actual instrument in hand, then something is amiss.... ;)

Big +1.

The RG I played for 10 years had a Lo-TRS II, a trem everyone in the solar system loves to trash. Yes, the metal is softer, and the screws strip more easily etc., but I worked with it and had a trem that kept its tuning till I got a new guitar. It worked better once the straight knife mated with the stud after a period of whammying (I reckon some guitars need this). Add a dab of Chapstick and things were hunky dory.

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

I like the feel of the 2 post terms - 6 screw is just fine with me if the block is milled steel.

I've got some Gotoh 510 Units (all Milled Steel Blocks), some 2 post, some 6 screw. They sound the same to me, but the feel is different.
Fender and Gotoh Vintage trems are also OK (with the milled steel block). Callaham is top notch in machining, but seemed to brighten up my guitar - not really a bad thing, just that it did seem to.

I've had some 2 post bridges (1 6-screw Wilkinson) with sintered Steel blocks. They don't sound nearly as good to me as the milled blocks.

I have not messed around with aftermarket units, but I must say the Ibanez ZR-2 tremolo is really a work of art. Definitely the smoothest I've ever played. It's the only unit I've ever seen that uses real bearings.

I am also a big fan of the Ibanez Edge line of bridges... have one on a custom axe and thetone is great, as ell as overall stability.

The Cam on a Kahler is also mounted on ball bearings, always has been :beerchug:

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

^^ Looks like a Batmobile part.

Dr. Veg: Vigier have been doing their own ball-bearing trems for a long time, a Floyd and a non-locking. Pierre had a Vigier, and like a schmuck sold it! Well, he's got dem Music Men now.

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

any discussion about which trem stays in tune best should take a back seat to this first and most important question:

how well cut is your nut and what is it made of?

further questions about the nut are:
are you sure it is a good low friction material (eg tusq or bone). are you sure the slots are cut correctly for your string gauge? Do the strings go around any corners in the slots due to the angle of the tuners? Have you lubed it with nut oil or chap stick? etc

after you have worked the intricacies of that out, then the next question is:

how well set up is the trem system you are using?

further questions are:
how well stretched are your strings? how well does your tuning balance against the springs after the strings are stretched? Do you want your trem to be able to dive bomb, or would you rather set it up so that a quick upward tug or upward bend pops your strings back in tune - you can't have both unless its a locking system.
Are the saddles smooth? Do the strings go around any corners between the ball end and the time they leave the saddle. Are the saddles lubricated? Are the saddles even and well seated? Are the springs well seated? Are they balanced?

If you go thru all this stuff - pretty much any trem should work really well. If not - then start looking at alternatives.

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

I like gotoh replacment stuff and also schaller. I have recently stumbled across a floyd made by abm called the katana. And although i have not tried one i bet there great. There not cheap around 500us. Take a look at the catalog http://www.abm-mueller.com/index2c7e3.html?new_products.htmlView attachment 38910

how did you come up with 500$ ?! it says something like 250 euro's, tops. that's 350$ at the most.

My favorite trems are floyd roses by gotoh with a custom designed block. I reworked the block in such a way that the arm pops in the block itself. I am also VERY fond of strandberg bridges. amazing stuff.

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

I know it's just GFS, but I like the bridge I got from them... my strat seems to never go out of tune. :)

+1 GFS products haven't disappointed me yet!
And as for my experience with wilkinson, IMO they make some great quality stuff! I'm happy to fit a wilkinson trem I my guitars :)

Re: Lets talk tremolo units: whats your favorite?

Wrong...Wilkinson makes a GREAT unit.

If the guitar wouldn't stay in tune it was not the Wilkinson it was either the set up or the user.

Don't trust the hype around many guitar techs...I've gone to guys that are held up very high and gotten some of the worst work you can imagine...

The VS50 is not that great if its the one I am thinking of. Its the cheap version of the VS100N which is the stellar unit made by Wilkinson. The VS 50 doesn't have the bushing for the arm and is lacking in other areas as well comparison to the VS100N which is the Cadillac version
