Lever switches

I just received the pots, switch and capacitor I ordered from the Guitar Parts Resource site to re-wire my Tele Affinity. I printed off the standard Tele wiring schematic from the Seymour Duncan site and the solder terminals on the 3-way switch are offset the opposite direction from the switch I had.....I looked at the Guitarelectronics site and they represented the one I bought, plus this schematic shows a capacitor on the volume pot.

I soldered per the Guitarelectronics schematic....everything works except the middle position sounds thin....similar to a Strat in the middle/bridge position....need to open it back up and check my wires. The neck pup is the original (Tele Affinity) and I had a S.D. Broadcaster in my box and stuck it in the bridge position. I used the white wires (actually yellow on the S.D.) as hot and all blacks went to ground. Why are switches made two ways and what's the function of the capacitor on the volume pot? Thanks.

Re: Lever switches

The switches are made two different ways because two different companies build them. Actually, I've seen about 6 different 5-ways. The cap on the volume pot is a variation of the treble-bleed-mod, as shown here:

Your middle position probably sounds thin because Duncans and stock Fenders are usually out-of-phase with each other. Just reverse the hot and ground on whichever pickup is easiest to do.

Re: Lever switches

Thanks, ArtieToo......that was the only thing I could think of.......I kinda like this new sound twist, though, and may end up keeping it this way. The reason I had the extra Broadcaster is that I originally put a Broadcaster set on my MIJ 50's reissue w/maple neck. This pup was too bright on that guitar and I replaced the bridge with a Jerry Donahue model per posts on this site. I thought it'd be a little tamer on the Affinity (much lighter guitar) but it's still pretty edgy. Any suggestions? I'll probably get another Broadcaster for the neck pup....sounds great for 'Stones stuff and blues (I play mostly Jurassic Rock)..........Thanks again.
