Lightest?

Re: Lightest?

Theres no easy answer to that question. The weight of a guitar body is going to be determined by many different factors. And truthfully Body "style" isn't really gonna be one of the major factors in determineing what will weigh less.
The type of wood generally will give you a fairly good idea what the weight will be. But thats not even really that reliable. Because two peices of wood cut from the same tree will have different weights. Normally the denser a wood is the heavyer it will be. And the softer a wood is the lighter it will be. But thats not even always true.
Like if you have two telecasters, one made of mahogony, and another made of Swamp ash. You can assume that the Ash one will be lighter. But thats not always gonna be true.
But as far as whice body style is the "lightest", Theres no way to tell. Cause like I said even if you made a bunch of bodys outta the same type of wood, even from the same tree. Those peices are gonna be different enough from eachother to make any measurements unreliable.

In my opinion, a Body thats really well balanced on a strap, tends to feel lighter. Even if the weight is much higher than that of a very unbalanced guitar. But that could be just me.

But if you wanna check out the general weights of different woods on different body types, Check out the "show case" section on the warmoth site. They list the body woods, and weights for each body. It should help give you a general idea....Ed

The original Parker Fly, which is about 4 pounds. Next would proabably be the Steinberger above (I owned one) anda Music Man Silhouette at about 6 pounds.

Re: Lightest?

What's a Gibson SG weigh? Those seem like the lightest guitar I've ever owned! Lew

Re: Lightest?

I don't know about the lightest, but some swamp ash strats can be pretty light .. the strat I'm putting together now has a body that weighs 3.5 lbs.

i have a swamp ash tele that is probably only 5 pounds, but fender doesn't make em like that one.

weight has more to do with wood than body shape. we could also start talking about chambers and other things like that. but i would think an sg would be about the lightest guitar i have picked up, thinnest body and smallest body. sorry haven't played a parker in so long i forget how much they weight

Re: Lightest?

parker's are so light i'm always too scared to play em...i'm afraid they'lll break?!

i'm serious...lol...they scare me :smack:

Re: Lightest?

Parkers are so light, you can't even notice they're there. The thin body, contours and graphite composite fretboard make for a guitar that really can't be beat weight-wise.

From what I've read they have some epoxi/resin coating that makes them super strong. Apparently you can put one between two chairs and stand on the guitar without breaking it. Of course, I'm not goint to try that with mine and I don't recommend it. But according to one review I read, traditional guitars need more wood to handle string tension, whereas a parker gets its strengh from its coating. The body still resonates like crazy and according to Ken Parker wood doesn't breath, so the coating is not affecting tone. I don't really know, I just find it an interesting and beautiful guitar.

'Til the horn catches you in the ribs. :D I'm sure it's just to remind you that it's there. ;)

Re: Lightest?

I think you need to define traditional... The lightest guitar I ever had was an Ibanez Sabre... S/G's seem to be right in the same neighborhood too...

Re: Lightest?

Balsa wood would make a light guitar, not sure it it would sound good, though :laugh2:

glad its not just that i dont have some kind of freaky shaped rib cage, and that happens to everyone. its the only thing i didnlt like about a guitar i was expecting to despise.
