Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

I am a bucker guy but, I would be up for a single if we could get something super fat for the neck position that would mix well with a bucker in the bridge.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

Single colis are real great.. If we are doing another forum pup it should be a single coil.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

why not sc? there are a crapload of HBs. I'm not even a sc guy, but a really sweet CS one might turn me and prolly many others on to them.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

Really both would be fine for me, a high-output SC for Strat, or that ultimate 80's bucker. In fact, that 80's bucker could have more demand outside this forum, but if we created the ultimate Strat pup, I wouldn't mind..

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

I'm really hoping for a new SDUGF custom pickup project.
I think that after two buckers we should go for a good single coil sized pickup. Either one that exists in the list or one with specs we decide on.
My idea:
Hum canceling single coil sized pickup with A2 magnets.

Splits well like the SD stack pickups - for a lot of quack.

When hum canceling - a lot of attitude, bite and harmonics, the A2 magnet should help here - think of the 78 or a Pearly Gates.

Can be designed as a Hot Stack or rails so it would preform well with all fretboard radius can be of course like a regular hot stack - let MJ decide on the specs that would make it sound the best.

What do you guys think?

Not me...EVAR!

But def the SC guys should get a forum custom pup like us HB guys did.

But I think the process the last time was sooo skewed...it ends up alienating a ton of people who MAY buy into a CS pup (like me), because people get into voting what is the perfect pickup for THEIR particular needs..as opposed to filling a general need/gap like the Brobucker did.

No one could handle the process better then Mike. Part of one of my jobs was to create surveys and I was thinking of how I can make something less skewed - I hardly can think of an idea.

However, products should be produced based on a need. If a group has a certain idea for a pickup and want to buy a bigger quantity from the custom shop I think that the forum is a good place to organize such a thing before you go and talk to the CS... but if you want the pickup to be a success among the rest of the bros it should adress a certain need.

Mike did a fine job handling the process. I'm not dissing Mike. The PROCESS is the problem.

The Crazy 8 was a "lets make a pup from scratch with no common theme" and was a big mess, AFAIC (and the results were iffy at best after people received them)

The Brobucker was very different. There was a common goal based on some established principles in PAF design and tones and was a big success I'd say.

At any rate, I'm not here to argue, just saying the process needs to be different. Choose a tone, set a few very basic parameters, and let MJ go for it..instead of starting with what color screw poles and spacing and detailing every little tech spec to the NTH degree..

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

I know you're not. I just gave him a compliment.

+1 on everything else. Now what did you think of my SC idea? :D

I just wanted to to make it clear, I thought Mike did a bang-up job and wasn't criticizing his effort!

The mini 78? I think its a great idea, though I've no use for SC or SC size buckers. I'll say though I just can't see it being all that possible...as it is they need to go ceramic in the lil' 59 (and possibly the JB jr)to give it some oomph. Its gonna be tough to pull off an A2 tone, I'd think??

The custom shop makes A5 lil humbuckers. I guess they go for A2 too. Thing is - it doesn't have to be an exact copy - I'm thinking more about a stacked SC that just tries to sound great without sounding like a small copy of something.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

I would be down with a SC this time - had a Brobucker and let it get away but I cant swing a cat around here without hitting a guitar with SCs in it so count me in for sure...

A lil78 would be cool - or as others have said a juiced-up neck that matches with HBs well...

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

A li'l bucker gets no vote from here, because I can change (and so should you!) the pickguards on strats and lace there a bucker - if we go Single coil, let's do it right. I think that HOT A II with coil tap should be great for beefed-up Strat-tones for blues/hard rock/shred. IE A2 Hot for Tele for Strat tapped(:D).

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

Why not a set of pups, bridge & neck? Or just a specially designed neck pup to go with either G8, Brobucker, or '78, SC or bucker.

There already are specially designed neck pickups to go with each of those SD CS bridge humbuckers. A '78 wound for the neck position, a Brobucker wound for the neck position, and a Crazy 8 wound for the neck position. Good idea, but what is holding anyone back from getting a set of said pickups that they want? The '78 & Brobucker are variants of PAFs, so just like original PAF pickups laid out in Gibsons, or even today having a '57 Classic & '57 Classic +, or Burstbucker 1 & 2, or BB 2 & 3, or a SH-1N & SH-1B, or APH-1N & APH-1B, or SH-PG1N & SH-PG1B, or SH-55N & SH-55B, etc... pickup in the Rhythm & Treble positions. Know what I mean? They are available.

Yes. You know what? You're absolutely right:welcome:

It's a great design but it should work mostly for the bridge. Considering the fact that many guys here use bridge buckers it would have less demand.

If we do a forum SC I'd go for an all around pickup.

Yeah, that whole krzy 8 thing was nuts.

I'd love to see some kind of "ultimate" Strat bridge pickup.

Always the weak link.

Thin & scratchy most times. Like a broken radio.

It should be something "thick" but not P90 thick... Smooth on top. Overwound so it can kick a Marshall or Boogie hard for lead work but NOT get so far off the mark that it no longer sounds like a Strat... ie; Quarter pound, hot rails, cool rails etc.

Maybe if it's wound "right" then the 'bucker guys could use it in the neck slot with their hair metal poodle 'buckers and have the outputs match up.

Ultimate '80s bucker... plllllleeeeeease. If 'ya can't get those tones out of a JB or whatever DiMarzio (like all those cats used) then you're doing something wrong.
