Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

Why not a set of pups, bridge & neck?

+ 1.

The SD SC line needs another set, this time with NO CERAMIC magnets. They're far too many already... A new set, like a 5/2 Stack would be great, or a 5/2 Quarter Pounder Stack set.

BTW, I'm a HB guy... but I just see the need of at least one new SC set.

Any takers?

I don't think we actually need another custom shop pickup. It's too early, soon we'll just be having a new one made for us monthly...

But that being said, I'm desperately craving some SC set love.

We NEED a custom shop single coil. Strat-style as I won't be replacing the APs in my Tele. I'm hoping for a Strat/P90 hybrid but strat -sized.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

Why not one of each with similar voicings as in '59 and little '59 or JB and JB jr.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

Yeah, that whole krzy 8 thing was nuts.

I'd love to see some kind of "ultimate" Strat bridge pickup.

Always the weak link.

Thin & scratchy most times. Like a broken radio.
I'm a bucker guy and was an old hairband player but I would LOVE a pickup that looked like a normal Strat single but sounded like a P-90 in the bridge.
I have the LS-93 Silverado Washburn USA Custom Shop swamp ash boutique Strat and last year went through several singles and mini buckers before settling for a SSL-3 Hot For Strat. It's still not what I really wanted tone wise in the bridge but it was the closest I could find.
I want a fat P-90 tone but still in a true single that has some quack when you combine it with say a SSL-1 RW/RP in the middle.
Build THAT and I'm IN:fing2::fing2:!

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

Not me...EVAR!

But def the SC guys should get a forum custom pup like us HB guys did.

But I think the process the last time was sooo skewed...it ends up alienating a ton of people who MAY buy into a CS pup (like me), because people get into voting what is the perfect pickup for THEIR particular needs..as opposed to filling a general need/gap like the Brobucker did.

Those who didn't jump on the Crazy 8 and who love modern sounding hot tones blew it!!
I wish I had kept the second Crazy 8 and the one in my MG100 is a keeper. That guitar with the Crazy 8 is my workhorse. It gets played out more than any of my other 14 guitars do. To me the Crazy 8 was a HOME RUN :fing2:!

Because there's a big difference in the design of each and they don't sound simliar to the originals. Better to ask them to make a SC sized version of an existing humbucker...

Plus, the results are different... you can just make something that would sound close or in the same vibe. I'll be surprised if they can make the exact replica.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

What? Single coil is winning this? What is happening to the world. We don't need more single coils, we need the ultimate 80sbucker! :D

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

Lets examine the common/desirable Single coil tones that most seek... than break it down from there.:ok:
The classic quack tone: Knopfler, Clapton's (Blackie)
The fat syrupee sweet tone : Gilmour, Frusciante
The thick screaming tone: Hendrix ,SRV
I'm not forgetting Teles and P-90's. But I'm guessing the majority would want a Strat PuP. Now, Granted the Individual player's touch and gear has a large part in achieving these tones. Should we try to make a PuP that can cover all base's or hone in on one? I like the 5/2 Idea,I feel you can cover a lot of ground with that

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

I voted single coil, to be honest I don't know too much about pick ups full stop.. but I have a brobucker and a crazy 8, so I'm sure I wouldn't be disappointed with a nice single for my Legacy! Even if I didn't really want one I think it would be fair to the guys who have been patient whilst the Buckers were being done. Fingers crossed for single.

I would want a cross between The fat syrupee sweet tone and The thick screaming tone.

Classic quack is in the notch positions. I think that with split/coil tap options you can get the quack combined with one of the others.

In full mod, I'm for something that would also work well with high gain - stack or any other hum reducing option. Would also give more tonal versatility.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

we DON'T need another 80s bucker. my god. find one, there's about a million.

but they are tied!!!! omg, no.

Quack is more than just a notch position. It is an art to voice and balance the pups by the manufacturer and the user to set the right pup height to get that magic quack.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

yeah, singles have inherent "quack" even when used alone.

I still push for a Single/something unique, a P90 is something a lot of people like (even me) and a single coil equivalent of a P90 would be cool as hell.

Because again we have to ask of the single coil, what is it that Duncan doesn't offer that we need?

In Theodie's subversive rallying for the JB lite (;)) someone states that there are many holes in Duncan's single coil lineup compared to say Dimarzio or Duncan's bucker range. I haven't kept up tabs on that, so could someone suggest what Duncan lacks... whatever pickup we choose, whether it's a bucker or a single I think it should be something that's worth it, not something Duncan already makes that we can just buy for cheaper anyway.

The Strat sized P90 toned single is one that there is no Duncan that fits the bill. Nor is there anything from Dimarzio I have found. I went through a Lil59,Lil Screaming Demon, SSL-5 and finaly have a SSL-3 Hot For Strat there right now. I have thought of trying a Dimarzio Red Velvet or something like the bottom plated steel pole single that is supposed to be close to a P90 from Fralin. Build me a P90 toned Strat sized and appearing true single coil for the bridge of my LS 93 and I will buy it!!
I will bet ya that that there are a LOT of other Strat players out there who would jump on that one.

Hey kmc, guess what- I've quoted you twice. I've got another idea that you've might have left out - some Jeff Beck orientation - raunchy, twangy, versatile, works well with high gain... I think it's the direction that my idea is going for.

Dangles - here are things that I would like to see:
P-90 in a single coil (that's pretty much a classic idea).

More variation in the alnico magnet hum canceling models - cooler, alnico, Hot Stack, hotter Classic Stack, A2 Classic Stack, Hot Rails in Alnico... etc...

Brian May in a Strat (they could call it the British Rocker or something).

Alnico 2 Quarter Pounder - or a QP Lite to go with the JB Lite :D - seriously, if there's a range that's neglected it's the one between the vintage and hot single coils - look at the tone chart.

There are more ideas and tones that are neglected.

+3! One for each position for me.

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

What now? Have we in the humbucker camp won by one vote?

Re: (likely unlikely) New Forum Pup specs!!! HB/SC?

we DON'T need another 80s bucker..

Please speak for yourself. I have much more use for a "80s" bucker than I do a single coil (which in fact I have NO use whatsoever for).:18:

Devils Advocate: if everyone could find their "80s" tone with seymours current offerings, there would be no such thing as the custom shop..or any other pup manufacturer for that matter.

AAMOF I see an awful lot of single coils in the Duncan lineup, especially when one includes tele and P90s..I'm sure all of you single coil folks could find YOUR tone within those standard offerings, no?
