Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

FuseG4

Our Neighbor Totoro
So apparently this Orange Or15 amp and the Jim Root Terror are the same amp with some preamp component values changed to revoice the OR15 for a more vintage vibe, but it's the same circuit board and layout. The Jim Root terror is heavily based off the Rockerverb dirty channel. Incidentally the dark terror is supposed to be the thunderverb preamp? Anyways...
It certainly feels like the amp has 4 gain stages. You can set the gain pretty high and then as you roll the guitar volume up you can sort of hear each gain stage start to add it's thing and so it's a fantastic preamp for going from a chimey slightly dirty clean to a really balls on the walls sludge (that can be tightened with an OD pedal).

The character is hard to describe, this amp truly has its own thing going on. It's got a ton of chime, mids, and big fuzzy bass. A little like a cross between the Night Train Bright and Thick Mode, but not as honking. Maybe a little like the Tweaker 15 Brit Mode with EL84s and a hint of Big Muff-ish fuzz. The fuzzyness is what's so cool for 60s and 70s psychedelic rock and blues rock, but you can get the bass dialed back and get more 80s stuff. It doesn't have a DEEP enough low end or the headroom to get really modern high gain tones especially at high volumes. All the compressed, chimey vintagey EL84-ness takes over and makes it sound like... a somehow small but raging vintage orange amp.

Although it does get even more fuzzy, sludgy and compressed at high volumes the amp is LOUD! I went to dime both the preamp and power amp the other day but I was just like "woah man" with the master on full and preamp on half. First impressions is that it FEELS louder than I ever remember the SCXD, the Night Train, or the Tweaker being. The harmonics that come out as you turn up really make the amp feel like it's up in your face.

The amp comes stock with JJs in all spots. So far I've ended up with matsush1ta and toshiba in v1 and v2, and a sovtek lps in the phase inverter. The amp feels noticeably brighter and has sweeter chime and is a little less "congested". JJs are a little too dark for me in this amp.
I did try briefly a 12at7 in the PI. Lowered the gain and brightened the amp in a way I didn't care for, although the lead tones were very clear and fluid that way.

I may use my Weber 1225 speaker that's in my DRRI for this OR15 for a while and get something else for the DRRI. I'm thinking a cannabis rex.

The OR15 really sounds good with Vintage 30's in a 212 or 412. Orange amps have a lot of lows and crunchy highs, so the midrangey V30 balances nicely with them.

I did a bunch of tube swaps on my Tiny Terror, and the cheap stuff actually sounded best. JJ EL-84's and Ruby branded Chinese 12AX7A's.

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

so far I have to say I like JJs EL84 much more than 12AX7. Their EL84 is a good mix of solid bass and sweet highs with enough midrange complexity.

I am GASing for a Orange PPC212. I tried the OR15 with that cab on the GC floor and it was killer, it even impressed the 2 non-guitar-geek friends I was with they thought the DSL was comparatively crap except for some sweet loud clean tones and more modern gain tones at high volumes...

Speaking of cabs, at the moment my one extension cab is just a little Vox Night Train 1x12 cab that has a cheap celestion in it... a super 65 (I sold the stock greenback). It's not terrible, the bass is muddy and the highs are a little harsh, and it's an open back MDF cab so that's not helping.
It should sound better with the weber greenback-type from my DRRI up in the vox cab, after all it originally came with a vox-labled celestion greenback. The way the speaker breaks up suits the OR more than the DRRI so now I can have a nice change of pace and get a more fendery voiced pedal friendly (higher headroom) speaker.

I think that'll probably satisfy me until I can find a good used Orange PPC212. Not in a huge rush at the moment though, I'm not in a band or recording anything.

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

I've been ready a LOT OF LOVE about these OR15 the last month !

Been on the Orange Forums almost 24/7 (i am currently on vacation) looking into an Orange myself (might have a NAD-thread soon), and the guys are ranting and raving over the OR15 o the Orange Forums aswell as over at HC Forums.
And more than a few guys have one over at MyLesPaul / Tele / Marshall (i kid you not) Forums too.

Looks like Orange is gonna hit the Jack Pot (again) with this 'lil-BIG amp
It sure as hell looks more like a 'real' amp than its older lil brof, the TT !

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

I see that some people on teh webz are saying this amp is a bit fizzy and to be honest I kinda hear it, I mean it IS an el84 amp with a high gain preamp. But when the amp is good and loud it's freaking decent I think, you just gotta balance the preamp and power amp.
The bass gets compressed quickly and there is not a ton of headroom obviously. I could see this amp not being loud enough for some people.
but at like home and studio levels the amp sounds brilliant.

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

Gotta roll some Mullard RI 84s in there to try. I liked JJs too until I tried the Mullards, now the JJs sound like **** comparitively.

I had almost the same experience, although I wouldn't go so far as to say they're in a whole other league. I do like them better just for taming the harsh highs a bit.

Why don't you get a set of Tung-Sol EL84s and tell us all how they sound? I've been dying to get a review from someone whose taste I trust.

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

yeah I was thinking the ones I wanted to try most are mullard, tungsol, and TAD

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

Oranges are amazing amps... I was not a fan of the tiny terror but keep seeing an OR15 at my store. It calls out to me everytime i'm there and I always look at the price tag and sigh. One of these days I'm goanna nab it because you describe in your original post the exact sound I dig in Oranges

IDR what amp you have whizzy, but in my amp the mullards were a pretty marked change vs. The JJs. With JJs in 18w mode on the crunch channel, which is pretty crispy as is, I could not ride the master volume much higher than 2 oclock without some serious strident breakup. The Mullards I can run full blast and the midrange is not as pokey and overall the amp is smoother without unwanted compression, or losing its aggressive character.

As for Tungsols, I would give them a try but it seems from all accounts they will be tighter and clearer than the mullards. I would actually prefer if the Mullards were warmer than they are. Plus I just forked out 85 bucks for a new speaker :bigthumb:

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

JeffB you got me really interested in those mullards.

Also this amp has got me determined to kick the burstbucker 2 out of my agile al-3000m. The Burstbucker isn't fat enough or strong enough. I want something a little modern sounding. My strat is getting my low to medium gain sounds covered better than ever I can turn my agile into a slightly more hard rock thing.
Thinking a Custom... then I can always switch mags around and find a good match. Neck is a Jazz N Alnico II

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

Well they may not work for you or that amp all that well Fuse...or they may be the best match there is...but IMO, Orange amps have a very thick heavy nasal midrange as is, almost like a cocked wah.. I would think the mullards should help smooth out the rough edges and help balance the EQ out, but IDK for certain.

Honestly, I think the bias plays a bigger part than the brand name. In the H&K, you don't have any control over that. Or it could be that the two sample sets we're comparing are very different. I hear what you're saying about the midrange. With the JJs, the mids were a bit harsher overall, and the highs were more brittle. With the Mullards, everything's a bit smoother, and there's a bit more thickness without getting into cringe territory. I hope that makes sense in some way.

I still think I'll eventually get a set of Tung-Sols to try just because I've had such good luck with their preamp tubes, and I have a bit of brand loyalty, I guess.

True, but I'm pretty sure I can hear a difference between Tung-Sol, EHX, Sovtek, and Mullard 12AX7s, so I would expect some differences out of the power tubes as well.

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

As I am heavily leaning towards picking this amp up, good timing for a bump.

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

You guys aren't helping my GAS! I've been kind of obsessed with Orange amps, lately, as it is!

Re: Liking the OR15, swapping tubes

Still loving this amp!

I've tried my EQ in the loop and it's cool but the amp doesn't *need* it at all. The EQ controls seem to be quite effective.

Wish I had more money... need a reverb pedal. Cleans could use some 'verb
