Lil' Screamin' Demon replacement?

I've got two Quarter Pounds in my G&L Legacy with a Lil' Screamin' Demon in the bridge. While I do like the Demon, I want more output with less-scooped mids, slightly less treble. Something that's a little warmer/darker sounding but is not really too overpowering in the bass or mids. Duncan or DiMarzio preferred.

Some pickups I've been looking at but have never used personally...

Duncan:
Hot Rails
Red Devil

DiMarzio:
BC-1
BC-2
Fast Track 2
Air Norton S
Tone Zone S (I've used a full-sized TZ humbucker and like it)
Super Distortion S (I've used a full-sized Super D and like it)

Will be used mostly for heavier thrash-type metal (think Testament, Overkill, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Death Angel, Megadeth, Metallica), as well as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate, and some hard/classic rock tones once in awhile.
Any and all suggestions/recommendations welcome. Thanks!

The Hot Rails is heavy with the mids...some say way too heavy. If you are used to the EQ profile of something like the Demon, or JB, or any PAF, the Hot Rails is way way hotter and way way mid-dier.

Re: Lil' Screamin' Demon replacement?

I would personally go for the Tone Zone S. When I was looking into this, reviewers were generally happy. I’ve used Hot Rails and they’re good but the youtube vids of TZs sounded amazing for leads

Like mids overpowering that of the Quarter Pound?

Is it close to the sound of the full-sized TZ?

Re: Lil' Screamin' Demon replacement?

Gotcha. Is it real dark with the treble really subdued or still decent treble?

Why not a JBjr?

I've never really been a big fan of the regular JB. Maybe the JB Jr. might be what I'm looking for?

This depends on the guitar, actually. It is great for heavy music, and...that is what it does.

Re: Lil' Screamin' Demon replacement?

I'd go HotRails with a 500k...then Id scallop that fretboard.

Well, it's got the G&L PTB system. 250k volume with 500k passive treble, then 1m bass control. I don't want to change the pots out since it's a great and very responsive control set.

Right on bro, I hear ya there...
I do think you should trust your instinct and gut feeling about the Hotrails and give it a shot though. If I had one Id send it to you to try out...
Love all the bands you listed and I think the HR will get you right in the ballpark...
Never tried a JBjr, some say its nothing like a JB, which could be a good thing because Im like you and never had much luck with a JB... At any rate Id prob try one of those two before I went with a DiMarzio, and in which case Id prob go with a Fast Track 1 or a Chopper maybe..
My comment about the scalloping was because it reminds me of Blackmore's Strat.

Re: Lil' Screamin' Demon replacement?

I got the comment about the Blackmore vibe, it definitely has that. Not sure I'm going to scallop it, though. :)

Fast Track 1 might be too bright, that's why I was thinking possibly the 2, but a Chopper might be okay.

My wife wanted some ideas of what to get me for Xmas and I'm really wanting to try a new pickup. Maybe I should just go with my first instinct of trying the HR.
