I have an GNX-1 and just got a POD XT. Although the GNX-1 has some very nice features and a few good tones, the POD XT amp models sound vastly better and closer to the real thing. The POD XT effects seem to be pretty good models, too, and the cab and mic modeling is very good. The only thing the XT lacks is a stereo input for practice with CDs. I hook up the POD and a CD player to a small mixer to regain that feature, and it works fine. I wouldn't use either unit in front of my amps, but they are great for late night practice and recording.

I have the GNX3. I've never tried the Line 6 Pod XT but I recentley picked up one of the Line 6 AM4 amp modelers. IMHO if the tones on the AM4 are anything like the Pod XT I'd say get the Pod. The AM4's tones are more real and sound much better to me and are quicker to dial in than the tones on the GNX3. Plus, every once in a while when I've been playing thru the GNX the tone will suddenly change on me!

a pod XT set up right after some fiddling with the knobs can fool most people into thinking it's the real deal. i still to this day have heard a digitech setup that can do that...they just tend to sound like fake versions of the sound you want to my ears.

I've owned a Pod 2.0 and a GNX2 (GNX 3 minus recording BS).
I thought the Pod sounded like cardboard. I almost returned it immediately, but found that it worked pretty good in front of a JC-120 (direct was aweful).
The GNX2 was a lot better, and didn't have the muffled cardboard of the Pod. The effects were also much, much, better. Still, the amp sims, though better, weren't that hot. Note that the sims require A LOT of tweaking, and there is a steep learning curve.
If you want an amp sim, the Vox Tonelab is the only way to go these days.

The Line 6 stuff is light years ahead of the Digitech equipment, just blows it out of the water. But don't judge the POD by the presets, sit down and play with the knobs to see what they can REALLY do. I don't like modelers for live use, but it's hard to beat them for direct recording (though they do sound pretty nice straight into a PA system).
Since the POD models the entire rig after your guitar (not just the amp, but also the effects, speaker cabinet, and mic) it's really better to use them with a full range speaker like you'll find in a PA instead of a typical guitar cabinet.

The Digitech RP21D was the best thing they ever made. I'm lucky enough to own one, which I just placed a Sovtek 12AX7-LPS into. The thing kicks ass, has tons of great features and has a digital output. I have not been impressed with anything else from Digitech.
Line6 owns the digital realm. They make the best solid state gear and digital FX around. My buddy has a Line6 PODXT Pro rackmount and it kicks major ass.

Well I used my L6 Flex III XL for our gig last nite.
I did great. I got some very good complements on
it as well.
The amps and stuff are tones from the Vetta.
Just like the Pod XT.
I'm quite happy.
I don't care for Digitech gear. Had it in the past.
Learned my lesson.
Depending on the venue size and time restraints, I either use my Flex III combo
or my rack (with Rocktron piranha and intellifex) and 4x12s.
The thing I hated most about Digitech gear was the annoying delay in patch changes.
I don't have that issue with the L6 Flex III or Rocktron gear.
That's very important to me in live use.
Anyways, again I'm quite happy with the Flex's sounds.
The PodXT I believe has even more goodies to it.
I'd go XT.

I used to use a Digitech RP2000 and power amps so that I did not have to carry tons of equipment overseas when I used to gig there.
I spend countless hours rewriting tone settings on the RP2000, so that I could quickly change from one sound to another.
People forget that the RP2000 is a preamp.

After hearing rebuttals concerning the POD2, I finally broke down and bought one. I is better that the RP2000!
This coming from an individual who owns a lot of gear and know what real tone from a tube amp sounds like.
Both the RP2000 and POD2 could be make to sound similar to but never truly like a tube amp and effects pedals. Still when used properly as a preamp, then the tone can be useable.
Finally, a lot of musicians use theses devices as pedals and then wonder why the tone sucks.. These devices are preamps - theat them as suck and you will be rewarded.
