line in??

well my crappy mic isnt recording anything and i was wondering which would be better. Get a new mic or get a line-in. first off i dont know where i could get a line in or what it is, but i was reading the guide and is said stuff about useing a line in to record. so yeah, how would i use it also. thanks bruhs!

are you talking about recording to your computer? you'll need an interface of some sort to plug either an instrument cable or xlr into. if you don't need (or want) multiple tracks recording at once, try something like the m-audio solo. it's small, acts as your sound card, and has both an instrument and an xlr input.

maybe you could just invest in one of those low-priced usb mic's for now? might get you through until you can get some proper gear.

Not that I know of. Go to a reputable music store in your area. They should have everything you need.

get a line 6 toneport or similar. they're interfaces that hook up to your USB port and allow you to either plug in a mic or instrument, and have separate outputs for monitoring. a halfway decent interface will cost around $80-120.

Your PC has a Line In built in - it's a part of your soundcard. Granted those built into a motherboard might not be as good as a PCI (internal add-in) card, but modern motherboards are improving in that department from what I've seen lately.

It's a stereo 1/8" jack like you'd find on a set of headphones/earbuds (iPod, etc).


But there are also things like have been mentioned by Line6 and m-audio that work through USB and/or Firewire ports.

However, I'm not convinced of their reliability on "all-in-one/general purpose" PCs. Yeah if you've got a PC that does nothing but music, that's fine, but if it's cluttered up with external hard drives, anti-virus software, games, ICQ, and other programs that bog down the system, you'd be better off using a dedicated Line In.
