hey so tomorow i will be recording a live song with my band and im having a pretty big problem right now... i just tried recording my guitar through 3 pedals going into my marshall... than i line out from marshall into my mixer... and than pop the mixer into my macbook pro using garage band... everything works... just ive never heard a worse sounding guitar tone in my life! INCREDIBLY BUZZY and trebly... sounds horrible beyond belief! tons of feedback as well however i used my noise gate to solve that but its just absolutely horrible... of course when i play my marshall through my 4 12 is sounds perfectly fine... everything normal... but trust from the recording it sounds absolutely hurrendous! i heard somewhere that it could be the pedals that cause the terrible buzz but im not sure so ill have to try tomorow... any other suggestions guys?i really need help!

Re: line out recording?

You didn't say which Marshall you have, but the line out on the older ones came straight off of the preamp. And what you describe is basically what a preamp sounds like before it's signal passes through a poweramp and speaker(s).

Something like a Two Notes Torpedo CAB can simulate both a poweramp and a speaker cab if you want an actual piece of hardware or if you want to use software on your computer, there are several VSTs that can do that as well.

Or just milk the speaker cab like Gibson175 said above, which would be the easiest and cheapest solution.

Effects Loop out into computer.

Go here:

http://www.igniteamps.com/en/audio-plug-ins

TPA-1 - power amp sim.
NadIR - cabinet

On your computer:

Add power amp sim.
Add cabinet.

Download as many IRs as you can find online, swap them out until you find the sound you want.

All for free.

Done.

Or track your guitar live using the amp sims in GB (split the signal) but using your amp for monitoring/so the rest of the band can hear you. Then when the smoke clears, take the amp sims off of your DI tracks and reamp them.

Generally speaking, waiting until the day before you record is not best practice for trying something new. :)

Re: line out recording?

and i have an older marshall.. the 6100 with el34s

Might be common sense, but always have a physical cabinet (or an attenuator with a load) plugged in, even if you're just recording through the effects loop. You might be able to get by using the standby switch but a lot of people don't like doing that. (And sometimes the standby switch affects both poweramp and preamp.)
