Locking tuners/Broken strings

Re: Locking tuners/Broken strings

So it's breaking INSIDE the hole?

Unscrew the locking pin completely and smooth off the tip that locks against the string.

I think the piece remaining in the tuner has straightened back out after breaking. It looks like enough that it probably was catching a burr on the post.

Re: Locking tuners/Broken strings

I thought the purpose of locking tuners is to make it so you won't have to wind so much string on a peg. I had light strings pop off when tuning.. Almost not worth the extra money for..

Yeah, it doesn't really need to make 1 complete turn. This is why I use them- fast string changes. I haven't experienced the issues the OP has had, though.

I have locking tuners on most of mine
And I have had the experience once

But it was on the high E string
And as described above,
Was where the pin had deformed the string
This part didn't make it all the way in to the same.place it was originally
And caused it to break before returning to pitch

Re: Locking tuners/Broken strings

Although I prefer normal Gotoh tuners I have some Schaller and Gotoh lockings here and there and they work fine.

Re: Locking tuners/Broken strings

I haven’t had any issue with Sperzels. Sounds like a burr or it’s bending the string on a sharp angle?

Re: Locking tuners/Broken strings

You don't need a coin to lock them. They lock themselves.

Yep been using Ghotos with my Washburns USA's for many years never broke a string at the post. On a restring just pull the string through the post wind it until it tightens the lock, tune pull the string along the length with a rag under the string to stretch retune clip and never touch it again until the next restring. Have never manually tightened one of these tuners with anything in the slot and never had one slip.
