Lockwire Rosa - custom built for me by pinto79 - progress thread

Kablamminator
pinto79 and I have been talking about this since early this year (if not long before that), but I've now finally handed him some money to make it happen, so it's official now. I'm getting a custom built Lockwire guitar from him.

http://www.lockwireguitars.com

He's made a few custom builds for other people, and has a few in the works right now in addition to mine. His early builds were excellent, and the stuff he's putting out now is even better IMO.

This is a thread from a couple years ago showcasing one of his original designs:
https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=183621

Mine won't be like that. I've asked him to give me his take on a Strat, essentially. His guitars use Latin plant names, so I chose a rose (Rosa) as that's the emblem of my home province (plus the guitar will be red).

Specs:

Body wood: swamp ash
Body finish: transparent red, clear gloss
Routing: top-routed, HSH, standard Strat control cavity and jack
Heel: sculpted heel with "Ibanez-style" joint (four independent counter-sunk bolts)

Neck wood: one piece maple
Neck finish: clear gloss headstock face, oil finish on the rest
Radius: 12"
Frets: Dunlop 6105
Number of frets: 22
Back contour: super soft V transitioning to C around the 9th fret (basically a clone of my Gretsch Duo Jet's neck)
Headstock: Lockwire six-in-line tilt-back
Nut: Graphtec String Saver
Tuners: Sperzel locking

Bridge: Hipshot hard-tail bridge, string-through

Pickguard: Strat W/B/W
Neck pickup: SD Pearly Gates, black
Middle pickup: SD Vintage Hot Stack, black
Bridge pickup: SD Custom Shop humbucker (specs TBD after I talk to MJ)
Switch: 5 position Superswitch
Pot 1: master volume, 500k Bourns
Pot 2: neck pickup tone, 500k push-pull
Pot 3: bridge pickup tone, 500k push-pull
Jack: standard Strat top jack plate

Switching is going to be a bit crazy, and I'm still not 100% decided on that, so I'll leave that for another post.

I'm going to use this thread to track the progress of the build, post pics, etc. This will be a pretty hands-on custom build for me, and I intend to be a pain in pinto's ass until this thing is finished. :)

Yay!

Please to enjoy Kisekae mock-up, close-like to true guitar:

Ignore the headstock.

sweet. i love that bridge too!

UPDATE: this is still happening. There were a couple snags, but it's definitely happening. Evidence:

Nice piece of ash!

The neck is done too, but I don't have a photo of that right now. The back contour is PERFECT.

Next steps are for Trevor to drill the bridge holes, and I have to go see him so he can sculpt the neck joint to my nit-picky specifications. He is going to hate me by the time this is over :)

After that - the finish!

Nothing like putting your own guitar together. Whether you do it or you have someone build it for you.

Re: Lockwire Rosa - custom built for me by pinto79 - progress thread

Other tidbits:

- The bridge humbucker is done! I gave MJ a detailed description of the tone I was looking for, and the result was a JB/PG Hybrid with an A5. The stud coil is the JB coil, so when split it will match well with the middle.

- I decided against a noiseless pickup for the middle. It will be an SSL-1 ... or maybe an SSL-2 since this is a 12" radius.

- The wiring has been determined. It's a bit nuts, but completely manageable. I'll post a diagram etc. later, but basically it will behave like a two humbucker guitar with the push-pull down, and a three-single Strat with the push-pull up. I'll also have a second push-pull that bypasses the tone controls in an interesting way.

- Trevor is ordering the tuners directly from Sperzel. They have a lot of options.

I got to see the body and neck in person today, so of course I took pics.

I quite like Trevor's headstock design, and the grain of the maple turned out pretty sweet.

Both pieces still need some detail sanding, but I am very happy with both the neck and body.

We also tested a couple of dye samples on some scrap ash pieces, and I think we've chosen the perfect shade of red. I also signed off on the heel shape.

Cool, two (kinda) new guitars in one go, I'm somewhat envious.

Oh I remember when I had Will Stinnett building me my SS6, it was not once or twice that I thought he would lash out on me for constantly nagging him or asking him to do one impossible thing after another.
Funny thing is he never did, he was a complete professional and did deliver and from my memories of those two previous builds pinto did together with pics of your build it appears he is every bit of a professional-meets-artist as well.

I am very happy for you.

Now I hope when this is over we can get some commentary from the man himself, huh, bro? ;)

EDIT: Just noticed it, is it just me or is the upper horn cutaway deeper in the second progress shot?

Thanks. I'm sure he will chime in eventually. Right now he's busy building guitars :)

I think that's just the camera angle. The body is pretty much Fender spec.

Nice! I love guitar build threads. I will have to update mine soon.

Re: Lockwire Rosa - custom built for me by pinto79 - progress thread

Trevor had never shielded a body before, so yesterday I showed him how I did it on my Strat. He did an even better job than I would have.

Also, I guess this is the first time I've posted the body with the finish on it. I'm very happy with how it turned out. Sorry I don't have any better pics at the moment.

Trevor is now doing the finish on the neck. I'll be wiring up the pickguard myself while he does that. (the wiring I wanted is fairly challenging, so I figured it would be easier to do it myself than explain it to someone else :) ).

Sweet man! Congrats. Getting to custom spec a guitar by a great builder is very exciting!

Re: Lockwire Rosa - custom built for me by pinto79 - progress thread

That's a great colour, and the wood grain is awesome. Looking forward to seeing the finished guitar.
