Logic Pro 8 - Guitar Amp Pro Demo

I was messing around with the amp simulator plug-in that comes with Logic Pro 8, called Guitar Amp Pro, so I thought I'd record a few settings for you guys to hear. The first is a Fenderish thing into a 1x12 closed back, then a British crunch thing into a 4x12, followed by a higher gain British into 4x12. They're all set to the "Dynamic" (57) mic setting, 1 & 3 are off axis, and 2 is pointing right at the center of the cone. I'm not a big fan of the amp modeling software I've heard, other than ReValver MkII, but I can imagine myself tracking with some of this for certain applications. No other EQ, compression or effects, just a little of the spring reverb sim in the plug-in.

Re: Logic Pro 8 - Guitar Amp Pro Demo

Coupla questions for wah wah....

Does single coil hum ever annoy you?/Do you do anything to reduce hum? It sounds really quiet even on the dirty clip.

What about when you are in a session....do any producers or engineers complain about single coil hum?

One more note, i like how you keep the rhythm steady even when you are playing on your own, i'll have to practice that.

Cheers!

Great stuff, Geoff! You're using your '68 Strat, right?

I like those tones a lot, although the high-gain setting is a bit darker than I'd like. I'll have to check out this Logic Pro stuff. :)

It's generally not a problem. If you think about how many great Strat parts have been recorded over the years, it becomes clear that there are acceptable levels of hum. I don't generally work with crazy levels of gain, except for the very extremes of live saturated lead tones, which is always in the heat of battle and becomes absorbed into the general racket I'm making. Recording wise, a gentle gate to fade out of quiet passages can help, but with DAW editing functions, it's not even an issue because any noisy passages can easily be silenced. I have my middle single coil RW/RP, so the "out of phase" positions are hum cancelling anyway. I haven't heard a "noiseless" single coil that I like, so I'm not prepared to make that tradeoff.

Yeah, it's not too bad for an amp sim, particularly considering that it comes with Logic. There's a bass amp sim in there as well. There's plenty of tone, cabinet and mic options to get closer to the tones you like. And yes, it's the dear old '68.

Re: Logic Pro 8 - Guitar Amp Pro Demo

Have you ever tried Kinmans, Geoff?

- Keith

Actually, Chris Kinman started out as a guitar repair guy in my old home town of Brisbane, and did the first set up on my Strat when I first bought it in '81! He's done an excellent job with his noiseless single coils, but for some reason they still have a kind of coldness to my ears compared to an SSL-1. Maybe I'm a hum junky.

How cool! I figured you'd probably tried them, living in Australia. I had no idea he did guitar repairs in your home town. Is he a nice guy? Seems to be.

It was a long time ago Keith, but I do remember him being very helpful and informative, and he did a great job on the guitar. I was only 19 at the time, but he was well known as being the best repair and setup guy in town back then. He's certainly done well for himself! Come to think of it, I've been blessed with some pretty extraordinary techs over the years, first Chris Kinman in Brisbane, and then when I moved to Melbourne I had Dave Ulbrick as my tech for about 15 years, until he retired from repairs to focus solely on his incredible amps and pedals. Larry Carlton and Robben Ford have both bought them, and I'm saving my pennies as I type to get one of his 30w 2x10 Venue Combos. Both of those guys are technical and innovative geniuses, and they've both added some mojo to that dear old Strat!

The problem comes in when you go someplace important and the hum is much more than it was the evening before and now you have a problem.

Re: Logic Pro 8 - Guitar Amp Pro Demo

Man i need to get a Strat!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool tones for a sim.... i have logic 7..... going to go 8 very soon!

Re: Logic Pro 8 - Guitar Amp Pro Demo

Wahwah, great tones and playing! I can only hope to one day be as good a player as you are.

Listening to your clips is also itching me to get my Strat playing again. I think I should try out some SSL-1s in it soon.
