Lollar P-90's?

Been reading up and listing to clips of Lollar P-90's and I must say, I am mighty impressed. At first I was looking soley at noiseless P-90's for my SG Jr. project, and I'll still consider them, but there are not very many "dog ear" options out there in the noiseless category. So, I've decided to open it up to regular P-90's as well.

Has anybody here used Lollar P-90's? What's your thoughts?

Right now, the frontrunner is the overwound bridge dog ear with the regular dog ear a close second.

Re: Lollar P-90's?

The Lollars are phenomenal. Mind you: they're not 100% traditional, but nonetheless, awesome.

The Duncan vintage P90 model, as well as the Fralins, are pretty true to form, as far as baseplate, construction, etc.

Lollar kinda "improved upon" the P90 with his design. He eliminated the baseplate, and the metal spacer bar. The polepieces make direct contact with the magnet. The result is a P90 that has just as much output, but a bit more air, clarity, and zing to it.

Really, really nice pickups. Had them in a Faded LP DC Jr. and they sounded awesome.

Currently, I'm rocking a set of Duncan Sp901's in my LP Special that I STOLE off ebay for $75 bucks for the set. And they ain't going ANYWHERE.

Nice. I'm not concerned about vintage correct or traditional anything with this. Heck, the guitar is going to have sealed Gotoh tulip tuners, an adjustable wraparound Gotoh bridge and chrome knobs. Hardly traditional for a SG Jr. :) I like the spank and rawness I heard in a few clips.

I have Lollar P-90 as my neck pup and it is a super fantastic tone machine for a P-90. (More pictures of the finished guitar to come)

I've had the Lollar 50's winds and Lollar standard P90's in the same guitar. The 50's winds were too weak for me all-around. The neck pickup in the standard set was awesome; great at everything (except being quiet :D), but the bridge was still a bit weak for my tastes. I like hotter-than-vintage pickups in the bridge though (regardless of the style of pickup), so that's purely a subjective thing.

Re: Lollar P-90's?

Austin's post confirms my findings:

If you like a standard P90 in the bridge, you'll need an underwound one in the neck.

If you like a standard P90 in the neck, you'll need an overwound one in the bridge.

Re: Lollar P-90's?

This is a one pickup guitar that it's for so no neck pickup.

I'm going back and forth between the standard bridge and overwound bridge, leaning more towards the overwound.

Are you going to be using it mainly clean, or overdriven? If a lot of clean, then don't go TOO overwound.

ALso, how fat/thin sounding is the guitar, acoustically? Keep that in mind.

A bit of both but I like my cleans to have a little bit of grit. I'm old school so I usually roll back the guitar volume to clean up. The spec on the overwound didn't seem that much higher in DC resistance from the standard, just 5% overwound, which looks to be about perfect.

I have no idea yet. :) It's still being built/assembled. See my thread in the Guitar Forum. It's a set neck SG Jr kit.

Re: Lollar P-90's?

Not hijacking, but: Can anyone post a pic of this new Lollar without baseplate and keeper bar? Stratman?
Just curious! I recently opened my first P90 to see the traditional construction. Like to see the difference.

Re: Lollar P-90's?

i have not tried the lollar, but im glad you are looking at a traditional p90 as well as noiseless. At least as far as gibson pickups go, the traditional p90s sounds heaps more vibrant, dynamic, harmonically rich and characterful than the p100. The noiseless just sounds like a generic humbucker with a strong mid bump. Imo, installing a noiseless p90 just kinda takes away all the charm of having p90s in the first place.

Re: Lollar P-90's?

I really wanted to stick with noiseless but there's only 2 real options out there in dog ear format that I could find. So, it became necessary to open up to traditional models as well. I wish Gibson didn't charge so much for their P-90. Used is not an option. New guitar means new pickup. :)

Re: Lollar P-90's?

I have a pair of Lollars in my Blueshawk. I got them from Scott_F. I think they are overwound bridge/underwound neck, but couldn't tell you for sure. At any rate, I've been nothing but pleased with them! The bridge pickup certainly has some snarl, but is definitely not too thin. It really screams when you put the gain to it.

Very cool. Would you mind checking to see if the bridge is the overwound or not? Got any clips or can you make any?
