you guys might remember the auction i won? well, i bought it home, it's been an interesting half hour having a look at it :D

holy crap. it's much cleaner sounding than i thought it would be - it's basically an EL34 fender twin!

the tube tremolo is fantastic, worth the admission price alone! the reverb's bust, but i knew that.. i'm asking the fella what he knows about it :)

and it's only got 2xel34s... i'm confused - this isn't what i thought it was, it might be 60w-80w instead - which i'm pretty happy about!

speakers are original, had a quick peek at the guts and everything seems ok.. here's the pics i promised :D

The only 2 - EL34 amp on the Orange site is a 30 watt Class A channel switcher but the control panel is on the top.

Thats a cool amp. I'd almost kill for a 30 watt class A EL34 combo. Run pedals into the clean channel and see what you get. A TS9 in front of the dirty channel should smoke!

Nice score Bro.

Re: Look what i bought home :D

inspection tag says 1976, i think it's a hustler 2x12 combo?

i dunno about it being class A, but im not fussed, it sounds sweet :D

Re: Look what i bought home :D

thanks for the links guys! i've actually been to all of them trying to find out what the hell it is i've bought :D

i'll definitely share with those fellas when i get back home - for now this looks odd - a common mod on these is to fit a standby switch instead of the slave output jack - but the chassis is marked for a standby switch from stock?! hopefully the vintageamps guys will know :D

Re: Look what i bought home :D

those are super cool amps, I played a Hustler a few years back and really dug it...Those 2 EL34 Orange amps from the 70's are around 80 or so watts...there was the very popular OR120 but there was also an OR80 and the only difference was the lack of 2 more power tubes on the OR80.

As for the tone, old (real) Orange amps are a lot cleaner than say Marshalls and do have a bit of a Fender vibe to them despite running EL34's...

in the UK oranges are in super high regard, i'm TOTALLY jealous. Nice amp mate.

no kidding, this thing's almost too clean.. it demands volume!

two of the preamp tubes are 12au7s - if i can work out which one isn't the reverb driver i'll try a 12ax7 breifly for more gain.. either that or attenuation, but i'd rather not push it too hard :)

such an awesome mix of tones though - i can nail the little wing tone (new 10-52's on a strat, neck/middle, texas hot/5.2) but i can also slam out the sultans of swing tone with the tone slightly back.. that's the ballpark it's in :)

i had to leave it at my parents when i came back up to wales though :banghead:

when it comes up here it's getting new tubes, a good clean in and out and plenty of playing :)

Re: Look what i bought home :D

The chassis looks like it was originally punched out for the other two power tubes. Interesting.

ON the reverb, check the tank springs as well as the tubes. Don't neglet to check the reverb cables as well.

Both Orange and Matamp are known for using whatever chassis they have lying about that'll work. Probably saves them money to punch them all the same.

i managed to check the reverb out the weekend i got the amp :burnout:

extracted the reverb tank, and a wire to the output RCA jack was loose.. back on that went :)

then i tried it in my marshall (i was replacing the reverb tank in that at the time) - the tank works! it's 31 years old and it works lol - didn't sound great through the marshall because of the impedance mismatch though..

any ideas for what might be wrong? next chance i get i'll try replacing the tube in question.. surely i'd hear at least something? might be the footswitch that's bust :cool2:

yeah, the feild guide page i found showed the variant with 4 el34s - hence me being confused when i found two!

there's no evidence it wasn't built like that though, no sign of tube sockets ever being there or anything like that.
