Looking For A Bridge Pickup (Nazgul // Pegasus // Distortion)

Indulger

New member
Greetings y'all. So I'm in need of a new bridge pickup. My guitar is basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard. I play mostly progressive metal/metalcore type stuff (Monuments, Periphery, Erra, Northlane, Born of Osiris, Volumes, etc..) so I play in some low tunings, with my low-string usually being a .62 tuned between A# and G#. So I really need the top string to have punch and clarity. The stock pups are absolute garbage, so I'm sure just about any SD would be an upgrade, but the 3 that caught my attention are the Nazgul, Pegasus, and the Distortion.

To my understanding, and I could be wrong on this, but the Distortion is the hottest with the Pegasus being the lowest output. And the Distortion/Nazgul have a lot more high-end, as where the Pegasus is more focused in the mids. I've heard amazing things about all 3, and am really leaning towards the Pegasus. If the Pegasus sounds amazing in B standard, but can't handle a drop G# based tuning as well, it may be a deal-breaker. I've heard mixed things about this on Sevenstring.org, so I figured it'd only make sense to also post on SD's website. I had one person tell me that it doesn't do low tunings real well, but then another person say that it sounds killer for him, and he tuned down the F#. So hoping to maybe gain some clarity on this matter.

Does anyone have any experience with these pickups in a high-gain/metal context? I've heard amazing things about all 3. And although I'm favoring the Pegasus, I've never actually heard any of them in person, so I'm not ready to pull the trigger just yet.

Appreciate all the feedback I can get. thanks!

Don't forget that they now make the Black Winter in 7-string.

Wow, my bad. But yeah, it's a 7-string. and I'm playing through a Pod HD Pro at the moment. I also use some cab impulses/pedals, but I pretty much have 3 general tones that I dial in. A real aggressive, tight metal tone. A more fat, buttery hi-gain lead tone, and then my ambient/spacey/atmospheric tone. So I need clarity in riffs and complex chords, but not high notes to be too shrill. Are there general characteristic differences between ceramic and alnico pickups?

I'd go Nazgul or Black Winter. Both have more clarity than the distortion

You might also think about a Full Shred 7 or the Crunch Lab 7.....
