Looking for a Burstbucker Pro like Pickup that doesn’t flab

I just picked up a 2016 Gibson Les Paul Standard. I use a Mesa Roadster. It has comes stock with Burstbucker Pro pickups. One thing I like about them is the single note character it has and almost a woody/fuzzy sound. Once I play power chords or do any palm muting at high gain, it flab’s out and gets muddy. I’m looking for a like Pickup that has versatility, character, note definition, but can handle higher gain power chords and palm muting without flubbing out and not extremely loose in the bass. I play metal/ hard rock in the Vein of Tool, System of a Down, Mastodon, Mars Volta. I did order a Jazz Neck and a Custom Sh-5 on the way. I’m not sure if that is what I’m looking for. I listened to a comparison of the BBP and SH-5 and the BBP has more soul to me.

If you score some mags, you can change and add soul to your Custom (or Jazz too).

Which magnets would you recommend?

All of them! A2, A3, A4, A5, Unoriented A5, and A8. They're cheap and can add a lot of soul to your pickups.

My 2004 LP standard came with BBP as stock pickups. Had them for a while. The neck pickup was ok, the bridge one was too weak, harsh under gain and lacked note separation. Swapping with the couple 59A4 and Custom8. I think you will be happy with the brand new pickups you are waiting for. IMO the custom is one of the best alltime bridge pickup. I don t like so much the jazz, I prefer the 59, but it is only a matter of taste. Don t know if your les paul is bright but I d suggest 500k pots (my les paul had 300k liear pots) for best performance.

I'm running BB Pros in my 335, but use a BB3 in my Las Paul for heavier stuff. It sounded great through my Roadster and now through my Road King. The cuxtom should do what you want, that's what I had in my explorer

Re: Looking for a Burstbucker Pro like Pickup that doesn’t flab

Do you play standard tuning or do you detune?

In my opinion, the Suhr Aldrich and the Dimarzio Tone Zone can give you that Alnico 5 hot PAF feel without getting muddy and loose with high gain. The Custom 5 that you ordered should be fairly similar to those 2 pickups as well. I own a regular ceramic Custom and it's got some glorious high gain tones while maintaining that articulate and dynamic pick attack.

That's just me though, I personally did not like the BB Pro at all, and much preferred the BB 1 2 3 pickups (have the 1 and 2 in an R8, 2 and 3 in a Tak DC)

Do take online demo clips with a grain of salt because everyone uses a different rig and mic placement when recording the clips. It'll never sound like what the pickup would do through your own rig, especially how it sounds in the room. For me, when I listen to these clips, I try to find as many as possible for one pickup, and try to listen for what's invariable between different demos, because that's probably most likely the one thing that won't change about the pickup regardless of rig. Everything else is pretty much moot because it's all dependent on how you tweak your amp settings and such.

For the OP, I think he needs to stay away from A2 PU's, like BB's, and not put A2's into any PU he wants to avoid a loose low end with.

The Custom/Jazz combo is my current favorite for a Les Paul. It's what's in my '16 Standard.

Stick with any A5 magnets, or any from that family. You won't have any flab in the notes at all.

Thanks for the replies. I normally play half a step down. I going to give the C8 a try with the Jazz in the Neck.

I’m having trouble deciding between the JB and the Custom or turning it into the C8. My favorite bands like Tool use AIC use the JB and make them sound amazing. Although they have multiple amps etc. the C8 gets lots of love as well as the Custom

Personally, I am partial to the Custom family. It can just change its personality so much with magnet swaps, more than the JB.

Custom has a bigger and tighter bottom end than the JB.

I’ll try the Custom first. If I don’t like it I will change the Magnet to the A8. I finally have my dream guitars. I just need to make a few hardware changes and dial in my sound.

It's been a couple of weeks and I am really digging the C8. The Jazz sounds amazing clean but when dirty the lows get mushy. I wasn't expecting that from all the reviews I heard on the forum. I may try adjusting the height and see if the muddyness on the lower strings changes.
