the MB .22 looks interesting. What else is out there? Prefer head to combo, but combos are sometimes cheaper

I scored a Jet City 20 watt head for 175 out the door...and it actually performs really well.

Egnator Rebel used. Its actually got more options, being a 6V6/el84 amp that you can run in a split set up, but you could use a set of Yellowjackets to make it a 4xel84 mode.

I love my little Jet City. I have a head that I got brand new for $250. I've since put some money into tubes, a choke, and a depth mod. All in all, though, it's still less than $350 I've got into it, and I love it. Out of those, I think the tubes are the most important upgrade, and I like the depth mod a lot, but even stock it sounds very good.

true....and classic 30s are pretty good sounding too! - so are delta blues models....

I put my amp into a pair of Cannabis rex speakers. They have a nice, round tone.

How cheap? The Mesa TA-15 is an amazing amp at any price.

I saw a YouTube clip of the VC30 a few days back whilst chasing down Lionheart material. I was rather more impressed with what I was hearing than I'd anticipated. Their built quality was always good and certainly on the Linebacker 65 I had many years back.

Just out of curiosity, if an amp maker was making a 20-30 watt amp, why wouldn't they just put 1 El34 in the damn thing, rather than 4 el84s? Or 6v6's for that matter.

I never cared for the sound out of any el84 amp that I've tried. Unless you're a hardcore blues fan I suppose.

Out of curiosity, how many EL-84 amps have you really sat down and gotten to know?

For example, I got to play an Orange AD-30 today at gig volumes. Man oh man, was that thing wonderful. Hard rock tone for days.

Well, I tried out a VHT Special 6 Ultra with a 6v6 and an el84, didn't particularly spin me. Tried a Vox AC30 JMI didn't spin me too much either. Tried out another homemade el34 amp from a kit, and they all just sound like a "hot blues lead tone". Not to say that's a "bad" sound.

Nonetheless, It's not like I've had the chance to sit down spend a bunch of time with ten million of the latest and greatest different amps like some people on the forum may have. I'm just a regular dude. It's just my two cents on my personal experiences with el84 amps. I think he'd be further ahead with something like the roland cube.

Re: Looking For a Cheep EL84 Amp 20-50watts

what toobs does the LBr 65 use?

It doesn't, the Linebacker is solid state. I don't think the 65W version in in production any more. I was just using my own experience of that amp as an example of the build quality Laney are capable of.

I'm not calling you out or anything, I was just curious. I've tried a fair few EL-84 amps, and most of them do much more than the hot blues lead tone. I was using the Orange for doom metal today, and it was killer. Here's an example of a great Vox AC-30 tone that's anything but blues:

So you see, when I hear stuff like "I think EL84 amps aren't good for much but blues" it kind of makes me think that whoever's saying that doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.
