I am replacing my pups in my Charvel. I am thinking JB or Distortion for the bridge.
Lewguitar said:Hi Cory, It really depends on the neck and middle pickups. If they are high output single coils than maybe the JB or Distortion would not overpower them...but my guess is that either of those HB's would overpower most single coils.
I would suggest the 59Trembucker instead.

Would 6.8 or 7.5 work?
What ratio do you normally want to achieve between single coil D.C. Resistance and bridge humbucker D.C. Resistance?
Gamera said:What sort of switching do you have in that guitar? I ask because it's not uncommon to have a HB that's roughly twice the DC resistance of the singles. This allows you to split the HB and only use the inside coil and still "match" the other singles. There would be a fairly noticeable difference in output when using the HB though. But depending on your playing style this can always be worked around.
If you're really concerned about matching output levels though, and you did say you wanted a "high output" single, use the SD Tone Chart as a general guide. Find a HB and singles that have rougly the same DC resistance. I say roughly because actually DC resistance is only a single factor in determining how a pup sounds. And I've had pretty good results mixing pups that aren't perfectly "matched."

You hit the nail on the head - I am so interested in a JB because it has a reputation for such a good coil tap sound.
I am planning on getting Kinman neck and middle pu's (not sure which yet, but certainly one of Kinman's higher output models, Woodstocks or Hank Marvins).
I just want to choose the right Kinmans and the right hb'er to get good in-between sounds and avoid PROBLEMATIC volume disparities. I realize there will some some disparity if I am matching a hb'er with singlecoils and want it to be powerful enough to sound good when.
Gamera said:Dunno. Maybe ask Kinman what he'd recommend and whether or not it'll be a problem.
You may also want to consider some Bill Lawrence pups. His stuff rocks and he offers some specific examples of which of his pups work in an HSS combo. In fact I think he says his personal Fat Strat style guitar is loaded with 280's & a 450.
You've got a Strat Ultra? Isn't that the precursor to the Clapton model with the active boost circuitry? Can you control that boost or is it always "on?" Because if you can control it that may be a solution to better matching output between pups.
