Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

Since using a Traynor YCV50Blue I've become quite accustomed to the Marshally tones, but it's not the kind of crazy high gain with gain set low amp distortion or raunchy pedal distortion I've been used to in the past.

Being a guy who likes his options I'm looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal that'll get me 'tallica, Marylin Manson, and Tool type tones heavy on the palm mutes. I'd only be using it every now and then since my style is more mild distortion now so it's gotta be something fairly simple and not too expensive.
I've looked at the Metal Muff Pocket, the pro tone body rot, or the good old standby Digitech Grunge but I'm not really sure where to go. Point me to a pedal that'll gimme the palm muted tones porfavor!

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

A big muff is Nasty and Bassy, But it doesn't have the tightness for metal style palm muteing. The metal muff does though, an does it really well.

If ya wanna try an do this cheap though, look for an Old Boss HM-2. They don't make it anymore, but its a pretty unpopular pedal, So ya can find em used cheap. To me they always sound like a bigmuff with a tighter low end, an they hold together better for palm mutes.

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

what you want youll find in the digitech 3000 guitar work station,,80 drum patterns, over 160 presets, recording soft ware ,amp and pedal models, cab models ,3 gain,3 tone knobs ,expression pedal and much more for 400bucks................i got one for chritsmas and im still discovering new **** about it ,its an awsome piece of gear.........raven

I really like the Metal Muff, and will probably get one soon (for the Sludge/Doom player in me).

If you AB the Metal Muff with the Grunge, you will find they are very simmilar !
I down-loaded the clips from MF's site and was shocked to hear how simmilar the clipping is !

I also love the EXPANDORA !!!

Then there is my fav dirt box, for that Jon Spencer Blues Explosion moments, the EHX HOT TUBES !

I'll probably come up with more later !

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

those are some good ideas.

I may just go with the Pocket Metal Muff for the size 'cause i'm trying to keep my board managable. I'm trying to fit a Whammy Pedal on there and that thing takes up a crapload of real estate.

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

It's funny I was just in a music store (last week) looking for the exact same thing...I have a Boss Metal Zone and while I do like the distortion I found it too harsh at times....I would not bother considering a Keeley modification so I went to the music store looking for a heavy distortion pedal with LOTS of BASS...That day I spent over one hour in the store and tried a lot of pedals....

In the store I tried the following:

ProCo Solo
ProCo TurboRat
ProCo You Dirty Rat
Marshall Jackhammer
EHX Metal Muff (full size)
MXR DIME Distortion
MXR Doubleshot Distortion Pedal

That day I went home with the Jackhammer. To me it had the sound I was looking for and by coincidence it was also the cheapest pedal $75 Cdn.

Try it and see what you think...I do not really do a lot of palm muting so I cannot comment on that...I am pretty sure if you want bass this one has it....Reviews I have read stated that some people find it too bassy....It is not the simplest pedal though - sorta configed like a metal zone......

If you hate the Jackhammer try the other ones I did ....

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

The pocket metal muff is definitely a great distortion pedal. I've tried several other lately, but nothing has been able to touch that metal muff...

nasty / bassy = danelectro fab tone

I'm not saying it's exclusively the Danelectro pedal, just that my roommate has one and it's nasty and bassy, and nasty. If it were mine I would mail it to you, because I hate it

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

There's always the Boss Mega Distortion. It's voiced for rectifier type distortion. It'll give you heavy palm mutes and get quite bassy.

You can probably go to your local Music Go Round and find one cheap!

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

Rocktron Silver Dragon!
That thing is the meanest pedal i've ever used and quite a versetaille one also. It ranges from tubescreamer style overdrive(very useful as a boost) up to industrial high-tech fuzz. In between there are some seriously brutal distortion sounds and it's tight. The only thing wrong with it is the stock tube which should be swapped for a little less gainy and warmer tube.

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

I like the Boss Mega Distortion. It has 2 distortion knobs which can be mixed an matched to your preference. One sounds more like overdrive, the other is a rock distortion, and the mixture is a modern metal distortion. This pedal sounds great with solid state and tube amps. Unlike many other heavy distortion pedals, the fuzziness can be moderated for some awesome dirty boosting effects. The separate bass knob lets you add a little rumble after setting the tone knob.

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

I have heard about the Line6 Uber Metal and the Landmine distortion pedal for the kind of sound you are looking for. The Silver Dragon is fairly versatile, but I doubt you can get nu metal gains from it. It does have huge bass though, and sounds sweet with a fuzz pushing it.

bingo!!! i was just about to post the same.... i love my Danoelectro Fab Tones!!!! I own a few of them as spares.... Once i find something i like i really stick with it... I only use it as a solo tone... in front of my C30's clean channel i a/b between a Boss DS1 for rythym and a Fab Tone for solos... Oddly the Fab tone has so much fuzz i only have the distortion controll on about 4..... any higher and it is just too insane!

Re: Looking for a nasty/bassy distortion pedal...

The mega distortion has the most bass of anything, my Ashdown is a subwoofer when I run it through there :laugh2: a pretty good pedal to run through a clean channel on a tube amp I think, might give it a shot.

I really want to try a metal muff sometime though, they look sick!

i have both the Mega Distortion and Fab Tone pedals and the Fab Tone has much more low end....

But since this player above that started the thread here has a Traynor the Mega Distortion may sound great.... when i bought my Mega Distortion pedal i tried it out at the store thru one of those Blue Traynor combos and it gave a great almost Boogie like tone... but at home thru my Peavey Classic series amps i don't like it.... It seems to like Traynors!

Don't know where you played one but the Silver Dragon is one of the most gainy things out there. On second channel this thing is pure chainsaw distortion or even fuzz(if you turn the level up and the volume down to avoid feedback). I don't know a pedal with more gain on tap.
