Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

These two get my vote I would love to have them both. I like my dirt to growl and roar like lions tigers and bears.

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

Haven't had much need for a dirt box in years but I've always loved any of the old Rat pedals. Used a Metal Zone for years but it's eq can be a little wonky IMHO.

Got one of the newer Metal Muff boxes a while back in a trade and really enjoyed it. Check out this demo. Hearing both Ozzy & Metallica played through a Tele with the MM almost makes me wish I'd kept it.

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

I was just about to ask why no one suggested the rat. In picking one up this week.

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

The Greenhouse No Brainer is awesome.

I haven't heard it myself, but I've been told by a few people who have tried the Walrus Iron Horse that it's the best distortion they've heard like, ever. *allegedly*

Walrus is uber hipster, their website is lolz, good pedals though.

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

A good distortion is the Malekko Sloika like already posted it has a real natural tube distortion feel to it but it is not SUPER high gain... I use a Hardwire SC-2 for tight ballsy distortion and it has beat many other boutique distortions that were on my board so its worth a look since it is also 100 bucks new or less!

If its good enough for Mastodon it is good enough for me!

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

Cmatmods Brownie has a good tone and feel. It's one of the most natural sounding Dist/Od's since it doesn't sound fizzy on the top end.

+1 for this pedal. I have the BSIAB which the Brownie is based on and it is such a good deal. The only downside is you have to build it yourself, the plus side is there are many mods for this pedal that let you taylor it to your needs.

My buddy let me try a current production Ratt and I couldn't get a good sound out of it, he also had the same problem with it as well.

Not necessarilly; you could buy mine if you're interested Ben! :D

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

Thanks for the continued suggestions.

Going to try the Distortion III and Moore Cruncher this week.

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

Now that I have spent some time looking into various pedals, I can definitely say that I DON'T want a pedal that sounds like an amplifier or is even amp-like. I have plenty of amps that I can push to make that type of distortion. I want it to sound like a distortion pedal. In other words, I want it to be obvious that a distortion pedal is being used. (Think Randy Rhoads)

As I figured you were looking for. AIAB pedals are completely different beasts. My suggestions still stand.

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

I used to have one of these and it had such a nice tone:

I have heard really good things about the Hardwire distortion pedal but I have not tried it myself, once I got a high gain amp I did not have a need for any distortion.

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

I've never tried the crusher, but the distortion iii stays on my board. Can be used to saturate (not uber metal, but still good amounts of gain) or roll back the gain and up the vol and get a nice clean boost on the front end of a tube amp. I've done that with my tiny terror with really good results.

Good hunting.
