Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

A good distortion is the Malekko Sloika like already posted it has a real natural tube distortion feel to it but it is not SUPER high gain... I use a Hardwire SC-2 for tight ballsy distortion and it has beat many other boutique distortions that were on my board so its worth a look since it is also 100 bucks new or less!

If its good enough for Mastodon it is good enough for me!

I'm inclined to agree. Those are just dead on it!!

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

Distortion III has a bit more modern tone. I liked it cause at home through my Princeton, it sounds similar to my dual recto high gain channels.
To me it is kind of like a Boss DS1 in flavor but without as much tone suck and a little more grain.

I bought a Fulltone Plimsoul. It's pretty versatile but tbh I like the dist. III better.

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

Thanks for all of the input, guys.

I did a shootout today @ Ludlow guitars. A beautiful Les Paul Standard into an Evans 1x12 combo.

Pedals:

MXR Distortion +
MXR '78
MXR Distortion III
Wampler Plex-tortion (just for grins)

The '78 has the most gain by a very large degree; Unity Gain on the other pedals was at 3 o'clock; with the '78, it was at about 10 o'clock. The '78 also has the most range in the Tone control, the most gain, and the added Crunch boost.

At maximum distortion, the '78 definitely got really fizzy, even with the Tone dialed down.

The Distortion III does the same thing as my Hip Kitty Oxblood: dumps the frequency extremes and boosts the midrange, which is definitely NOT what I am looking for; I imagine it would be way too much mids through my Wizard or Weber Alnico speakers.

I ended up with the Distortion +; it has PLENTY of gain on tap. Maxed out, it never got fizzy or shrill. It does dump some of the high freqs when engaged, but doesn't lose all of the low freqs; the end result is a really ballsy distortion that begs for multitracking. :)

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

Nice. One of my all time faves. Great for goosing an already breaking up amp.

If you liked that PlexT i can give you a killer deal on mine

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

I have not tried all of the range yet, but I've not been impressed by Wampler pedals overall ...

Re: Looking for a new DISTORTION pedal

I think I had an old MXR Distortion Plus from back in the day; never did figure out what happened to that thing... Those were pretty good pedals, as I recall.

Your call on the Dist. III is pretty accurate, it does boost mids a lot (which I like) but then again I am using it with an old Princeton.
