The Line 6 DL4 sounds really, really good but it's to difficult for an old, geezer like me to work with on the fly - especially on the gig. To complicated! I don't miss the noise, the hiss, the muddy tone, etc., etc. of my old Echoplex...but I miss the ease of operation and the organic quality of the tone.

I'm up for some suggestions and ready to try something new.

And I have an almost brand new DL4 with expression pedal that might be for sale.

Re: Looking for a new Echo Delay...

How about a Boss RE-20 Space Echo? I just got one and it's great. It's basically a Roland Space Echo 201 in pedal format.

Alright there isn't a real tape in there, but it's supposedly a very good emulation - and regardless, it sounds good and is easy to use.

Re: Looking for a new Echo Delay...

if you like the L6 dl4, try the Lg echo park...its a stomp box size version with a few less models...same size as a boss pedal...

Re: Looking for a new Echo Delay...

Malekko 300 bright or dark
Carbon Copy
Ibanez DE7
Danelectro Danecho

Re: Looking for a new Echo Delay...

I recently picked up an Akai Headrush E2 and I have to say it's quite amazing! 3 modes, Tape delay, regular delay and a loop setting. you can route the tape delay to 4 amps (simulates 4 heads). It's got great sound quality too (as long as you run it through the fx loop - otherwise it's a bit hissy)

Re: Looking for a new Echo Delay...

carl martin echotone. very sweet and you can switch between a preset delay time and tap tempo. they also have the delayla but i havent tried one in a long time. duncan is also coming out with theirs so that might be an option

Re: Looking for a new Echo Delay...

I think WahWah would recommend the Ibanez DE7 as well. The clips I've heard from a few sources online have been quite good, too.

id hold out and check out the new duncan one when it comes out. it sounds really sweet.

Re: Looking for a new Echo Delay...

Thanks guys! What I'm looking for is a echo pedal that'll let me easily get some of the effects the Edge gets with U2. I also like the way Eric Johnson uses echo.

And I'm also after that kinda of ghostly subtle kind of delay during a solo where the repeat sounds kind of distant. Hard to explain...can't even think of an example.

I'm not looking for loops and that kind of thing. Nor super long delays.

Nor reverse echos or any of that fancy stuff.

And I really do need it to be simple - or else I won't even use it.

At my age if it's mentally to hard to do - I don't!

I'm kinda thinking about killing two birds with one stone and checking out that H20 chorus/echo thingie...

Lew..try a DE-7 it is simple to use and sounds good....no tap tempo though.

Re: Looking for a new Echo Delay...

I'll chime in here Lew...nothing else has the tone really of tape but there are still some great delay pedals out there...my faves at the moment are the AnalogMan if you can find one, they are a little hard to get but are well made, easy to use, sound amazing and don't cost too much...there are 2 versions one 300ms and one 600ms.

I also really like the new MXR Carbon Copy, designed by Jorge Tripps (the same guy that designed the Line 6 DL4 you have now!) but the Carbon Copy is a purly analog delay, 600 ms and has built in modulation that if you choose to use can add a little shimmer to the delay.

Also, the Retro Sonic Delay is quite nice, 600ms of delay and very well made. It's a little more money than both the AnalogMan and the Carbon Copy plus it's a little bigger but it's a great pedal!

Last, if you've go the room for it on your board NOTHING tops the old stand-by Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man...killer tone, built in modulation, a preamp that can be used to gret effect if you are good with it, simple to use and sounds great...Eric Johnson uses one next to his old EP-3's, the Edge used to use 2 all the time and still uses one on his board...they don't have the 550ms of delay they say they do, most of them are around 450ms but if you decide you need the extra 100 or so ms there are several guys out there modding them for that and more. The EH DMM is, IMHO the last word in analog echo/delay pedals...it doesn't do revese echo, long delays, it doesn't have tap tempo...none of that crap, it's just a delay pedal but it's the last delay pedal you need!

The only things I didn't dig about the DMM are that it had some hiss I couldn't ignore, and it seemed to clip early on.

Re: Looking for a new Echo Delay...

I almost posted Peter's demo video but didn't...great clip BTW!

As for the hiss in a DMM, analog delays do make a little noise, the DMM is an old design and may have more background noise than other newer analog Delay pedals. As for the clipping, hot pickups will tweak the DMM into a little clip on the attack of a note but it not only is a good tone over all the slight clipping adds to the Echoplex quality and I love it!

Im excited to see what you think Lew...like I saidif you decide you have to have true bypass (if your's isn't) need longer delay time, less clipping if you use hotter pickups, AnalogMan offers some killer mods for a DDM as does Howard Davis, who is the man that desgined the DMM for EH in the 70's!

That's exactly what I was going to recommend. Super easy to use and you have two pedals in one.

If the DMM doesn't work out, give the H2O a shot.

Just click on the picture for a youtube demonstration from pro guitar shop on the functions of the DLS Echo Tap.

+1

If you need a delay with a smaller footprint consider the Maxon AD9.
