Ok....I've decided to swap out the Rio Texas Special from my LP. It's far too bassy for my liking and it sounds a bit flat when clean. I've narrowed it down to 3: 57 Classic, PGN and Ant. Which do you like best and why? I'm looking for a beautiful, sweet and "alive" clean tone along with singing lead tones when distorted. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I would go with the PG/n, I have never heard one get muddy in a Les Paul style guitar.

Re: Looking for a new Neck pup for my LP...down to 3

I voted "other". Alinico II Pro is my favorite in the neck. Sweet tones that can be made to sound almost like a strat single coil with a treble bleed mod and rolling off the volume knob.

Re: Looking for a new Neck pup for my LP...down to 3

well...GHWelles is right the Alnico II pro has a very Strat like top end, and is very sweet sounding...I love mine...but I also love my PG neck...and in fact like I keep saying the PG is my favorite neck humbucking pickup. I do not own an Antiquity but have played a few and they are very cool...I do really like the clean tone of an Ant neck, The classis 57's are cool but not as cool as a duncan, they have a sort of blandness through some amps...of the 3 you named I would go with the PGn no questions asked.

Which do you hear as having the more extended high end: AIIPro or Pearly Gates? Not "brighter"...but more genuine highs and harmonics?

Thnaks! Lew

Good Point, Lew !!!

Also, ampliFIRE.....have you tried a Jazz ????

It's my favorite Duncan Neck PUP for a Pauly....but may be too smooth for what you're after ??? .....................:)

Re: Looking for a new Neck pup for my LP...down to 3

i love my antiquities, and i recommend them to anyone. except those of you that play metal or some other extremely heavy music

Re: Looking for a new Neck pup for my LP...down to 3

I voted for the PGn. I just installed one in my Hamer Special FM and that thing is the tits. It would sound amazing in your LP. I always thought the 57 classica was a little lacking. But that could be due to the style of music I play, which is more metal based.

Voted Other, The SH-2 Jazz model is the deal, not too bassy, not very middy and perfect highs! Can't beat the Jazz!

I think it varies with the individual guitar and personal taste. It's not very middy....that's a given. But the Jazz neck can have to much bass if you've boosted the bass setting on the amp to make the bridge humbucker sound warm and fat. For that reason, I like alnico 2 neck buckers a little better.

I love a Seth Lover in the neck of a les Paul. My second favourite after a Seth would be a Pearly Gates :)

Well...The thing is that the Alnico II Pro and the PG have different types if highs. It's tough because the AIIPro has a lot lss mids that the PG making it sound much brighter and the AIIPro also has that nice glassy top end that the PG does not have, and IMO a lit of the PG highs are really high mids but really I think that the PG has a more extended treble and I know it has more harmonics but the AIIPro might seem brighter due to having a lot less mids and the glassy almost Strat like top end. That is one reason why the AIIPro and the CC go SO well together...if you look at the EQ curves they go together like a 2 piece puzzle when you run both pickups! When you run both of them, the mid spike from the bridge is gone as well as the glassy top from the neck...and you get this amazing full very round tone that takes up a lot of space sonically but it not muddy even with gain! Sorry about the CC/AIIPro rant but I love this combo! But like I said...I belive that the PG has more treble and harmonics but the AIIPro sounds brighter

I hope this helps a little bit.

Kind of like how the upper mids of a JB makes it sound brighter to most people than a 59B...but the 59B actually has more genuine highs, IMO. Lew

yes...just like that the PG (or the JB) has more upper mids, but the AIIPro (or 59) has more real treble...that is a great way to say it!

Thanks! I love the Jazz for cleans, but how is it for leads?

Fabulous! Duncan should change the name of the Jazz, IMO, because those pickups ROCK!

I believe Jolly really likes Eddie Van Halen's playing and Jolly gets a killer rock tone with a set of the Jazz pickups in his Les Paul.

I have tried all those pups, and IMHO, the PGn will give you the Tone you are looking for.

Re: Looking for a new Neck pup for my LP...down to 3

i really liked the PG neck.......had a beautiful Allman Brothers type clean tone, and nice singing quality because of the upper mids.........not too much bass either, just right

Re: Looking for a new Neck pup for my LP...down to 3

I admit I've never tried any of the other ones, but I voted for the Antiquity. I put one in my 02 LP Classic based on advice from folks here. I was looking for something airy, articulate, clean and beautiful, like what you're asking for. I'm sitting here playing through it right now with moderate overdrive and loving it. The pickup is very balanced and responds well to your playing. You can caress it and make it sing, or spank it and make it yelp. APII was the one I was looking at before I got this. I love the Ant. From what I read on here, you should be happy with either of those two or the PG.

For me, that would be the Pearly Gates.

I love the Alnico 2 Pro, but if you want something a little less bassy with a nice singing lead tone, the Pearly Gates is what you want.
