Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

I am not after a transparent volume boost, that I already have (Zoom power drive Pd01) which is only good for that.

I am after an overdive that kind of colours the sound of my amp cause my amp has only one channel and the overdrive on it sounds like its trying to be smooth but its quite fuzzy and buzzy when the gain is light to moderate like its breaking up in the low end and other frequencies, its quite a warm amp. For solidsate, Its a Vox pathfinder 15R.

I love its tone very warm and jangly clean, and its cheap. I use a Marshall Guvnor 2 for distortion and crunch sounds which has an amazing smooth tone and clarity to my ears and suits the amp well. My amps light to moderate overdrive category is not so good.

I tried a Hot cake yesterday and It was good its own kind of way but not smooth enough and I could hear too much of my amps gain coming through.
Very nice pedal but too pricey.

Thats right, I have it for sale for $70 in the US, so i figure extra $10 would be worth an International trip.

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

Yea, I'm partial to the Full Drive 2 for smoothness. Big, Fat and smooth. And TWO channels, and TRUE BYPASS. Same distortion chip as the original 70's Tube Screamers.

The modded Tube Screamer pedals are fine (Keeley and Analogman), but they are only ONE channel and NOT true bypass. For $40 more you can get a Fulldrive. Well worth it in my opinion. :D

What do you guys recommend, i have tried a number of pedals but I still havent found a good pedal that I can use for light to moderate overdrive, and I mainly set my amp on clean and click in my pedals for disotrtion and overdrive. What I want is somehting very smooth with no clipping, crackling or buzzing but that you can hear every note in a chord. What do u recommend? the ones i had in mind were a hotcake and a boss sd1 Super overdive.

Overdrive is the same thing as clipping. You could always just use less overdrive on a given pedal..

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

Seeing as you're in New Zealand, I suggest either a hotcake or a G2D Creamtone. At lower gain settings, the hotcake is a very transparent od/boost. At higher gain settings, it starts to get a unique, fuzz-like bottom end. Very cool pedal.

The Cream-tone (especially the older circuit) is very fat and warm, without the midrange exaggeration and bottom end loss of a tubescreamer. there is a distinct lower-mid fattening, but your amp tone isn't coloured heavily like other pedals. It's the ideal pedal for a smooth, warm drive. What guitar/amp do you run?

I've compared original tubescreamers, the sparkledrive (very disappointing) and boss stuff against the G2D pedals and hotcake, and they all come away looking very ordinary. The Rockshop stocks G2D.

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

Bones Ill take you up on that offer I hear maxons sound pretty good do I need to pay by credit card cause I dont have one? How else wil I be able to do it?

A guy in the guitar store today was selling a Tubecreamer 808 for $379 and I though that was way to much.

I guess I'm the only one using a Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket....swap out the stock tubes & it goes from clean to scream with the turn of a knob!
