Re: Looking for a used tube amp around $500
Just chiming in because I used to own both a Peavey Classic 30 and the Traynor YCV-40. Between the 2, I preferred the Traynor as it seemed to have a nicer clean tone and maybe was a little more versatile. What really turned me off of the Peavey were the EL84s. I don't know exactly where to place the blame but I always had tube rattle in at least one of the 4 el84s. All were JJs and I bought a new set and had the same problem. I just couldn't take it and so traded the amp away and have steered clear of other el84 based amps ever since. The Traynor uses 6L6s in the power section and sounds great.
Both amps sound a lot better with speaker upgrades...which adds to the price.
