Looking for alnico 3 custom buckers to go in my Epiphone Les Paul "Lucy" project

Wilkommen, Bienvenue Welcome and come on in

So as the title says I'm looking for a Seymour Duncan pup that will effectively mimic the Alnico III custom bucker that was in the iconic Clapton/Harrison "Lucy" guitar as used on WMGGW

Any suggestions my lovely friends.....

There are no equivalent Duncan p'ups to Gibson Custombuckers.

Having said that, you can get excellent, and for some arguably "better" A3 PAF tone by modding a '59 set.

The original '57 would be nice however that maybe unattainable within my budget can you suggest an alternative to the repro 'Lucy'....

Any good Les Paul. Or Les Paul Studio if you're on a tight budget. Or Epi Les Paul if you're on a super tight budget.

Just get a good one and put some 59's in it with the polished A5 magnets replaced with A3.

But keep those old magnets so you can put them back in again. ;)

"I might have to turn it up..."

if you just want the paf vibe then a set of 59's (which can be had very cheap used) and a few magnets to swap and you should be good to go

Custom Alnico 3 humbuckers? I just happened to have gotten a custom set like that made for me by Mojotone. Lots going on right now, but hoping to have them installed before much longer. They are more affordable than a boutique place and you can have them tweaked however you want. A win-win.

Well, nothing Gibson has ever done resembles the original pickups of course. But Gibson were definitively still using A3 mags in late 56 to early 57......some to many of the early PAF's in the lap steels into the Goldtops could well be A3.

OP - All the makers of pickups do their own thing.....so what Gibson does with their Custombuckers is really only done by them - hence no other brand will do something quite the same.

If you are keen on the Duncan lineup, I'm thinking the Seth would be the obvious choice, as that is what Seth designed for the PAF, even if the machines didn't quite wind what he originally envisaged.

Re: Looking for alnico 3 custom buckers to go in my Epiphone Les Paul "Lucy" project

I have picked around with the A3/UOA5 combo - loved it with some very generic pups. Can only believe that it would be awesome with a pair of straight up 59's. Get them used cheap and a couple of mags and go for it. For a buck, get an A4 and try that too.

The pickups have been replaced (a few times!). The set that will be going with it are a pair of Zebra PAF's from a ~2000 something Korean Dean Cadillac. These were originally a decent pair of standard PAF style pups. I have replaced the magnets in both of them. The neck has an A3 magnet now, yielding a brighter neck tone, with moderate output and exceptional clarity in the bass. The bridge has a UOA5, making it something of a cross of the best characteristics of an A2 and an A5 magnet. Warm, articulate, nice highs, more mids than a standard PAF, very even tone and balanced tone with moderate output and lots of character. This is a very classy vintage sounding pair of pickups now. Really articulate under gain, even toned, great cleans, just a fantastic sounding pair.

Bill Megela makes a clone of the original Custom Bucker for a few people "in the know". As I happen to be one of them, contact him and tell him that Pepe sent you. You'll get exactly what you're asking for in spades and then some.

^ Ah yes, I had forgotten about him. Probably a great deal cheaper than Gibson too. He did say he'd done a couple of tweaks too in order to overcome a few weaknesses of the originals.

Hi DLT67, I'm starting a similar project. Which pickups did you wind up going with?

Re: Looking for alnico 3 custom buckers to go in my Epiphone Les Paul "Lucy" project

I highly recommend Seths with A3 it's my favorite setup. The only problem might that the stock Seth bridge is a little too weak and bright with A3. But I've fixed that with Brobucker ;)
