Ill try to make this short and to the point. I play in a 4 piece hard rock / metal band. Standard tuning and drop D. Its just me on guitar, which I like for many reasons. Im currently using and switching between a Randall Rh300 G3 and an Ibanez TBX 150h. Its just solid state head ibanez made for awhile. A toneblaster with extra gain pretty much. I run them through Marshall 4x12 1960a cab, and a GK 2x12 cab for my drummer. Kind of as a guitar monitor for him, and a little fuller sound. I know it may sound lame, but the cheap Ibanez SS head sounds really awesome in the bands mix. I found the sweet spot. The Randall sounds really good and heavy, but note clarity for my lead parts really lacks. I have a BBE sonic maximizer on all the time, I use a BBE boost, and Boss chorus for lead parts when I need it to fill. I use through effect loop as well.
I want to get a tube amp for shows and keep the SS for backup and use for band practices. Ive been listening to tube amp demos for the past 4 days. Being a single guitar player, I need a nice full sound. Nice crunchy mids and highs, and a low that can chug. Some of our songs have chugging parts. I often let chords ring out and play little lead riffs. Especially in the drop D. I can strum open and rip in D minor and harmonic minor which I love . I listened, and played some really great sounding tube amps when playing chords, and leads, but then go to chug and you get fuzz. Or, like my Randall, its a chugging monster, but leads and chords sound kind of weak. I even put the bass on 2 and the chug still overtakes everything. Im also looking for simple for stage setup, so running multiple heads is a pain. Ive done it. And do not anymore. Playing shows has to be quick setup and take down. At my level of shows.
My pick so fas has been Peavey 5150, or EVH 5150 50 watt. Im not rich and those are in around 700 dollar range. Some of the EVH models are a lot more, and 100 watt is real expensive, but 50 watt tube amp is pretty good for my show sizes. Just wondering if anyone had any opinions. The band is newley re formed and I want to start off sounding sweet.. if you made it this far and still reading.
