Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

Apparently it does void the warranty but I don't think it would affect the resale price as long as you're honest about putting the pup in the correct condition.

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

Yes, it does. If you want it to be a maxed out beast like you said of low-low mid thickness PLUS treble bite: use a double thick A8 and ceramic spacers on the sides. The double thick A8 provides deep bass and the ceramic spacers add bite.

Other pickups thatd get me there? I was looking into the bkp nailbomb or the duncan nazgul

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

More aggressive CustomCustom with tighter bass = Dimarzio Norton

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

You might look at any of the signature pickups for the guys in Periphery. Misha has a couple BKP sets, I think. The Duncan Alpha/Omega set and Dimarzio Titan set are Mark Holcomb and Jake Bowen’s signature pickups, respectively.

yea i did. juggernauts sound too clinical and have weird high mids, omega was lacking in mids. rags i thought were weird, titans maybe. Bkp in general i think are just too expensive and hard to return. titans probably

Changing magnets is no big deal. There are plenty of guides out there to walk you through it, and I really doubt you’ll regret having learned a new skill.

If it were me, i’d try swapping in an A8 and/or regular ceramic before springing for a new pickup. Magnets are cheap and have a huge impact on the sound of the pickup.

Couldn't you just get an Invader? You will get more mids, and more power than a CC.

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

The Custom Custom (A2) will have more mids, but if you're looking for more attack than the SH-5 you're going in the wrong direction.

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

^ Yes that's why I suggested a (double thick) A8 (or A2) in the center with ceramic spacers. Since he seems to want everything, bass, mids, and bite. That mag setup will get you there.

Just judging from sound clips, the invader sounds too muddy and lacking in treble definition. I dont think itd be great for the djenty djents. I was thinking nazgul...how versatile is it?

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

The Nazgul is great for seriously heavy music, and has gnarly high end..I don't think it has the mids you are looking for. You may also find what you need by finding a very tight-sounding pickup (like the Pegasus) and adjusting the tone cap to give the roll-off in the high end you need. Thing is, with really mid-havy pickups, they rarely have very tight bass, unless you go active or add an active EQ or preamp.

Im not interested in the pegasus for 2 reasons. 1, ive listened to a lot of soundclips and read a lot of reviews, and it seems like its an overmarketed POS with a very lacking midrange and low end (no offense to SD). 2, ive found that alnico 5 does weird shiit to the mids. After a lot of research and playing pickups from duncan, emg, and dimarzio (and owning a few duncans) i feel like the dimarzio titans are the way to go for me. Thanks for the active preamp suggestion though, interesting take. I just havent had a good experience with any active circuitry, with the exception of the fernandes sustainiac (even though it sounds craap just as a neck pickup)

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

Could you please give a brief description of all the custom sounds? Like which one is maybe scooped vs. bright, flabby, percussive, best for screamin lead or better for a nice rhythm tone? I have yet to try anything from the custom series, maybe a good set to buy and start magnet swapping? Thanks ahead of time

Ty. All that delay and 3 songs, not really sure. For me, an old rocker metalhead, think I like that custom custom

The CC was the balls in that video.

Its a very organic full pickup, its just a bit loose in the lows and missing something in the low mids

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

Did you buy a Titan set yet, or are you holding out hope for something from Duncan? What hasn't been covered so far?

You've been pretty negative on Duncan pickups and we've talked about quite a few. Perhaps we need to keep a running list because I've lost track.
