Looking for some new pickups

Im just about done with my first project guitar. Woohoo. All I have left is a set of pups and the wiring. I had a couple questions and would like some advice/input. As of now my first choice is to go with a gibson 57' classic in the bridge and a phat cat in the neck. From the clips I have heard of the phat cats it seems to be a pretty awesome neck pup. I was planning on using 500k pots with one master volume and master tone. How does this setup seem to all of you? Will the combo of a humbucker and a p90 be odd? Any problems I may run into with the wiring? Will the 57' classic fit in a normal humbucker routed pickguard? Im open to any and all ideas/ suggestions so please throw some my way. Thanks!

Joe

Re: Looking for some new pickups

both would fit the routing. The phat cat may not be great with the 500k pots.

Someone who uses them will chime in.
A seth or '59 would be cheaper than the '57 classic.

Based on the searches that I did on the phat cats I found that the majority seem to be using 500k pots. Atleast thats what it seemed like. Hopefully some people will throw in their input.

I did notice that several SD pups would be cheaper than the 57'. How similiar would they be to the sound? Several of my favorite guitarists use the 57' and I have that certain sound in mind...atleast what Im aiming for. Any Gatsbys American Dream fans on here? Thanks for your input!

Re: Looking for some new pickups

I would also think a '59 would sound better than the '57, but I'm partial to Duncans.

that may be a question for the Les Paul forum if more people don't chime in here

Re: Looking for some new pickups

500k pots will be fine with both, Im gonna be honest...the Clasic 57 is not suce a great pickup though. Ifyou want an Alnico II PAF (like the classic 57) try a Seth Lover, the 59 is also a great pickup too but it is Alnico 5 so be ready for that.

Re: Looking for some new pickups

TGWIF is right ..
if the classic '57 is alnico II, then the Seth is a better choice for that tone

(sorry, I just don't know the Gibby pickups, 'cept for the BBs on my LPs)

Re: Looking for some new pickups

I found the Classic 57 to be a tad on the bright side for an Alnico II bucker (not a plesant bright either) and it also had this odd stringy quality if that makes sence...I just didn't care for it.

Thanks a lot for the input. I will take it all into consideration. Im am definitely trying to stay away from brighter pickups because I am running through a marshall jcm 900 dual reverb (which is already on the bright side). Im going to do some more research on the Seth Lover because I think alnico II is going to be the way for me to go. Thanks again.
