looking to save a G&L Asat Deluxe need a pickup recommendation or she goes back

Hi forum

i am new to the site but not new to seymour Duncan

I have a ASAT TRibute Deluxe '
it is a decent axe but i already have a G&L comanche and a strat and prs

what i do like is that it has tele like tones which is why I bought it
but what I should have gone for is the Blues boy Which I believe is the tone
I was after in the first place.

i cant say i hate this guitar i am just not in love with it.

i am considering
a hot rodded humbucker set
jb/jazz

or a jb/59

if anyone has done this or a similar mod i would be interested to hear your comments

I cant justify a decent guitar in my camp when I have stellar guitars right next to it
If I cant make this thing a beast or at least let her make her mark and do something that the others cant
she has to go.

Welcome to the forum.

If the only thing holding this guitar back is the sound, then it will be worth keeping, if you aren't in love with the feel either, you may want to send her back.

The JB is a great pickup, but it seems a bit polarizing in mahogany bodies. People either love it or hate it. I've only had a JB in alder and basswood and while I loved it there I can't speak first hand in mahogany.

As for the neck pickup, it depends on what you want. The Jazz is clear, bright and punchy, the 59 is still fairly bright, slightly scooped in the mids with a full bottom end. Some people have found it to be a bit muddy in some mahogany guitars. I only have first hand experience with the 59 in basswood, where it sounds fantastic.

Another thing to keep in mind is Seymour duncans 21 day policy if the pickup you get just doesn't work in your guitar.

Thanks for the input
the guitar feels really good
no complaints there.
and the sound is as i said decent

i play primarily jazz, funk and blues
i rarely go distorted but a bit of gain for the occasional solo is not out of the question
so the jazz in the neck is certainly a keeper

I usually play my guitar on my personal recordings
and relegate myself to rhythm duties

being a gospel musician I favor the cleaner tones

i only thought JB because the Asat deluxe american uses a JB in the bridge and a 59 in the neck.

i would go seth lover but the whole idea of this guitar was to coil tap to get tele tones

If another guitar is exactly what you want, then I'd go for that...

If you are in two minds then take it back. There is no point playing instruments that you don't love.

At first glance I may have taken your post lightly
but after reading your Tag quote from Yehudi MEnuhin

I had to really take a hard look.
especially since I just wrote a similar thread about not keeping what you dont love.
I guess my hope was that the right pickup combination will give me a great tone. one I dont already have with my other Axes

thanksfor that advice

Those stock G&L import humbuckers are okay at certain things (clean and quiet stuff mainly), but they are definitely a weak link on the guitar, especially once you start breaking up the tone with gain, fuzz, high volume, etc. I would at least try a pickup swap before giving up on the guitar. Jazz, funk, and blues...I'd recommend a Seth Lover set or a DiMarzio PAF Master set. I have a G&L Tribute Ascari, which is very similar to yours (it has the Gibson scale and a set neck). I have PAF Masters (two bridge models) in it. It's very versatile, and easily covers a lot of ground in those genres you mentioned, and more.

I JUST finished gutting a G&L ASAT Deluxe! Yanked the stock electronics, and pickups, and put in a set of Duncan Phat Cats. Proper CTS pots, and wired it to my liking, and it's fantastic. If yours plays well, and it's not a non-resonant chunk of wood, a pickup swap should get you what you seek. What kind of music are we playing?

I was just playing her this morning unamplified
sounds pretty good unplugged.

I play mostly

Bluesy pop
funk
jazz
gospel

wow two BRIDGE MODELS
how does that work?
i would think your neck pickup would overdrive rather easily

As far as the Seths
they were actually my first choice.

but i dont want to lose my coil tapping ability

but to be honest i dont think i could go wrong with a pair of Seth's

You can order 4 conductor seths so you can still split the humbucker.
Here is one on amazon. Your local dealer should be able to order them as well if you prefer that.

Two bridge models can work pretty well, depending on what you want from each pickup. I went with two bridge models because didn't think I'd like the lightly wound A5 in the PAF Master neck model. I also don't mind a warm neck pickup (I don't play a ton of full chords on neck pickups). Additionally, that particular model isn't a hot pickup at all. There were plenty of hotter real PAFs put in the neck position of old Gibsons.

Recently modified my G&L Tribute series ASAT Classic. Removed the (perfectly acceptable) Made In USA MFD T style single coils. Installed SD Li'l '59 and Hot Rails N - à la Chapman Guitars ML-3 RC.

The guitar now rocks but still twangs a little. The sounds are more in keeping with the comparatively slim neck and big frets formula.

You'd probably dig the Whole Lotta Humbucker set. It's 4 lead too.
