Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

A/B'd with my friend's DSL, we both prefer my JVM.

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

The Marshall forum has a big divide about the DSL. At least the sides for and against are very vocal about it. The DSL owners can get quite overbearing I have noticed. And I often wonder if many have owned other Marshalls. That said, they often take alot of guff about the DSL, so I don't blame them too much.

But there is also the same issue with JVM and JMD's too.

In general there is a split between post 800 and pre 800.

^ Agree w JeffB. JCM800 is the demarcation line for Marshalls. The book, The History Of Marshall Amplifiers is a fascinating read with tons of great photos/schematics that goes into gory detail on the subject.

My DSL40C is good??? I got it reasonably cheap from someone who thought they wanted a tube amp until they got one, changed a few things around to suit my preferences, & now I'm pretty fond of the green CH! All in, with the speaker upgrade & stuff, it still cost me under $600 so it's a great amp in that regard but it's by no means the Marshall to end all Marshall's...

That video was NSFW or for my 5 year old..take care before clicking folks

And fwiw- I own one too. A new 40. As mentioned they are good amps with some tweaking of tubes, bias and speakers (and the c19 mod for the red channel). But Ive also owned the heavy hitters of classic Marshalls ,and the new DSL is very different. The UK made ones too. The new DSL series is certainly better than the haze and MA series amps they were meant to replace. But given a choice Id take a VM, or RI anyday of the week

I still have the original Doyle Marshall book from 93-ish. I was looking through it the other day and noticed I had used the template in back to mark down the settings on my 1987 from 20+ years ago :)

I need to get the recent print with all the updates of new amps since the 900 and 30th Anni series.

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

I'm not a DSL fan but I have one. I also have other Marshalls that I like much better including a JTM45 and an original Silver Jubilee. I would probably sell my DSL 15 if I could, but the used market is flooded with them. It is worth having around I guess. Sometimes I like it but its a love -hate relationship.

The green clean channel on the DSL series is way to "crisp" and lacking in harmonic complexity compared to a JTM45, for example, IMO. The red channel is thin at lower gain settings but gets fizzy and buzzy when you turn up the gain. The DSL's success has mostly been based by using the Green crunch mode as a pedal platform. It was more available and less expensive than old JMP and JCM 800 amps for that. It's a good amp by modern standards, but I find many other Marshalls, and some models of other brands, to be better.

They do sound substantially better once they are biased correctly!!! I've checked, or checked & changed the tubes on at least a dozen different DSL's for friends now, most of them brand new or close to new & not one of them has been biased properly yet!!!

When I opened up mine for the first time both of the trim pots were both just wide open! After that I left nothing inside that thing unchecked! It makes me wonder how many people out there are playing them, & praising them, without really even knowing how they sound while running optimally.....

Also they should probably just do away with the Reverb circuit, it's pretty much completely useless anyway??? Good effects loop though, LOL!!!!

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

This is so god damn hilarious.

NO, NO, NO Empty . . . this is NOT funny . . . the DSL is thee best Marshall on the market . . . anyone on the Marshall Forums will tell you so !

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

I had all kinds over 9 years, JVM, Engl, Vox HW, mini boogie,Peavy XXX 6505 combo,line6 ect really like my DSL 40with speaker change and tubes.Les Pauls were awesome and my new strat sounds great. My buddy really like his with the creamback he said you hear all those vintage tones from all that bands he likes. He had a 5150III,JVM Peavey ect also :)

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

I like the DSL, although I'd never replace one of my 800's with one. I do prefer the JCM2000 ones, but most of those I've played have had simple mods done (and most likely biased correctly) as well, so there's that. JVM's are great amps too, too much for my needs but great nonetheless.

MA and Haze are pure garbage though.

At the end of the day it also depends whos manning the controls. I don't like playing through 900's but I've heard some great tones out of them.

ok that video was hilarious but it has to go

language is way inappropriate for the forum

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

Man, I am glad I don't have to get in the middle of this Marshall amp brou-ha-ha...

(...of course, when you've rebuilt a JTM45 reissue with PTP and all the fixin's and mated it to a variac at 100V, you don't have to)

And yes, any true Marshall-head out there needs to get Doyle's History of Marshall book.

And now the real burning question for the Marshall ages:

split or shared cathode?

Discuss...

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

shared. split is brighter and thinner to my ears (at least with stock values) and with the low output pups i use i like the extra warmth.
