Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

shared. split is brighter and thinner to my ears (at least with stock values) and with the low output pups i use i like the extra warmth.

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

I've got a DSL 15 in my room at the moment and to be honest, I prefer the sound of my Fender Mustang III. The DSL is okay for cleans on the classic gain (green) ch., but if you use the red channel, you have to keep the gain set very low or it gets ugly. There's sort of a metallic, almost tinny sound throughout.

I noticed the same. They omitted the Green crunch mode and the Red lead 1 mode. The Johnny Eggz mods help the Red channel:

but the "metallic tinniness" remains. I think it is from the extremely high filtering (for a 15 watt amp). On paper it seems like it should be a great idea with 2x6V6s instead of the usual but often mushy EL84s, but in practice it doesn't work so good. It's not the bias settings either.

I noticed , to lesser extent, some of this on the big DSLs too. The DSL series are an amp mainly designed for metal, modern metal, but they are so tight they just don't breathe like a vintage tube amp. It's good for some styles I guess.

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

The 40/50/100 s have a very unnatural sounding (for a marshall) low mid and low end. Very apparent on the green channel. It takes some real finesse to dial in the bass and resonance to sound good on the 40c/100H. With a Modern oversized 4x12 cab, I'm sure it's even worse. on my EVH 2x12 which is oversized, the amp can sound real woofy and muddy in the lows/low mids.

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

If anybody has a DSL 15 and doesn't want to go to trouble of the Johnny Eggz mods, JJ makes a tube that does 70% of it if swapped into V1. It's a reversed 12DW7. A 12DW7 has one of the triodes the same as a regular 12AX7 and the other a 12AU7. A 12AU7 has only 17% as much gain as a 12AX7. However, if I recall correctly, the regular 12DW7 puts the 12AU7 side on the green channel. The reversed version will put the 12AU7 side on the red channel. If you only use the red channel and never use the green channel, any lower gain tube in v1 will help tame the red channel. But any lower gain tube applied to the green channel will gut the green channel.

The Johnny Eggz mods go beyond just controlling the excess gain of the red channel but also make it fatter, and warmer, but it's much more involved than just swapping in a tube.

My JCM 2000 DSL100 is friggin' awesome!

Oh wait...is this thread about the DSL100H?

I was gonna say the same thing about mine:headbang: Isn't the Dsl100h supposed to be pretty much the same though?

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

Id say this thread is about all DSL's.

The 40c/100H and JCM 2000 50w/100w are not that different in the grand scheme of things. Slightly better iron on the UK versions, better transition and eq when channel switching on the VSLs. But the original point of the post was the video about the marshall forum, and some of the overzealous DSL fans there (of course the video is hyperbole)

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

Also, what led me to get my DSL was watching a band I've been friends with for years, but also hadn't seen in years. I was literally blown away by their guitar tone and their guitarist was using a JCM 2000 DSL100. That experience is what led to my own purchase of the same amp. I'm totally glad I took the plunge!

Yes! I've been singing the praises of the ECC803S for years to control excess gain. What I love about the 803S is that it retains the voicing of the ECC83 without the gain. It doesn't make the amp super stiff like using a 5751 does in V1; but, it cuts the gain down. There is also a subtle restructure of the lower mids, and the only real compromise is that the EQ range will not be as pronounced ... I definitely notice less range in the EQ.

If your amp uses both sides of the triode in V1 and you like using gain pedals in front of your amp, the 803 is a must-try.

The valve is based off of an old Telefunken model of the same name, by the way.

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

I'm probably going to get sucked into the DSL vortex in the foreseeable future. I need Marshall back in my life, and this seems where the popularly priced tube amps are. I've played some of the combos and liked them pretty well.

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

youtube dsl and the marshall forum and you can see the video. its funny but the language is way over the line to be linked here

Re: Looks like the DSL is THE BEST modern-era Marshall of them all.

I just watched it. I post on the Marshall Forum and I own a DSL (made in 1997, came stock with a Drake transformer and has no bias drift issues).

I found the video extremely funny. Major kudos to whoever made that!
