Ive currently got a project MIM strat that Im working on. So far, I have assembled new parts to overhaul the entire guitar. Ive got new pots, and new switch, new wires, new Callaham bridge and other cosmetic upgrades not worth mentioning here. Anyway, my last purchase before sending it to the shop is the pups.
Here is the delima; Im going for the Gilmour style (I know, so is everyone else), but I dont want to be "limited" so to say to just his "sound" (I know a lot of his sound has to do with style and effects). I want the option to be able to play Clapton among other classic rock legends. I know nothing about pickups apart from the fact that I do not want active (i.e. EMG). All I do know is that the stock pickups suck. I have been told to get everything from Fralins to Duncans, EMG's to Fender Custom Shop's. I was pretty set on the Seymour Duncans until recently.
When I called SD about what I wanted, the first guy told me that without a doubt to get an SSL-5 for the bridge, an Antiquities RW/RP Surfer for the middle and an Antiquities Texas for the neck. When I called back a couple of days ago, I was told that the Antiquities were for, get this, "someone from today trying to get the sound from back then. The SSL-1 would be for someone who is listening to an original recording and trying to get that sound now." Thats a quote. That left me even more confused.
Ive been to Gilmourish.com and spoken with Bjorn about the setup and he told me that David didnt start using the SSL-5 until "The Wall". Up until then, he used the DiMarzio FS-1 in the bridge. On top of that, I had considered the SSL-5/SSL-1 RW/RP/SSL-1 for the setup - but Bjorn said that the SSL-1 might be better for the bridge position. He also said to get the Fender CS69's for the neck and middle.
With all that in mind, I took a little trip back to the beginning and did some more research. NOBODY has anywhere near the setup anybody has advised me to get thus far that has posted any sound clips or videos for me to actually listen to to judge for myself. *dammit*
THEN I run across a fellow by the name of Curtis Novak. I have yet to give him a call, but plan on doing so very soon. Dont get me wrong, I love the sounds I have heard from SD's and I love their service, but I want to get what I want and dont want to do this 5 or 6 times to get it right. So, here I am lost as to what to do now. The bridge can be one of three things, the SSL-5, the SSL-1 or the DiMarzio FS-1. The middle can be any of these (all RW/RP); SSL-1, Antiquities Surfer, APS-1, Fender CS69. And finally the neck could be any of the following; SSL-1, APS-1, Fender CS69 or Antiquities Texas. Then we throw Mr Curtis Novak into the mix........where does that take me? :banghead:
Does anybody see my confusion? Im sorry that this post is long, and if youve made it this far, I thank you 1000 times over. Please, if you have any advice, Id love to hear it.....
