I have to urge everyone who's lusting over owning tons of guitars to rethink.
I've had my share of guitars and amps, and must say....when you have a few of your favorite guitars, there's no point in owning more than you can play.
However, a bunch of amps sitting in a row is so much funner. You can take the guitars you've outfitted with good pickups, and have grown fond of, and just hear them with so many different flavors of tone. It's all about AMPS!!!

In a perfect world, you could play clean on Fenders, Vox, Matchless, Victoria, or a Bluesbreaker. You could riff all night on vintage Marshalls, Hiwatts, Mesa or Gibson amps. Walk over to your favorite highgain amp and let the solos rip on a Splawn, Bogner, Soldano, or Two Rock. Yeah, I know, what a luxury......but amps cost about the same as guitars, so why not have more amps, and a few main player guitars?

:headbang: ;) :yourock: :haha:

I'm working in that direction..... I currently have 21 guitars....... but I play them all. Well maybe two that I don't use too much.

I also have 3 Amps 1 Marshall (900) and 2 Fenders a Super Reverb and a Deluxe Reverb. I would like to get another Marshall and maybe a Bogner!

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

Yep, i'm never happy with my amps. I've been through three in two years, and i'm looking to unload this one now. But i havent sold any guitars, I grow into those. The amp is the main part of your tone, a good amp will make your POS guitar sound awesome in the main.

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

To me it's about food groups.

I have a 6l6 amp that I really like (vibrolux), and my Blue Angel covers the EL84 and 6V6 Class A end of things. I'm adding a soldano to cover the high gain end of things. I'd like to add more stuff to that pile, namely the new vox, a small tweed fender and a JTM 45 style amp, but I've got my basic needs covered.

As for guitars, same thing. I have a strat, a tele, a humbucker guitar (PRS), and a p90 guitar. I also have a shredder and a pawnshop guitar, but both see little use. I'd like to add a semihollow and maybe a jazz box to the pile because I don't have access to those sounds and would use both of them if I did. But I see no need to own four strats at this point.

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

I'm at the point now where there are only 2-3 guitars that I really want to play day after day. It's either the 58 or the 56 RI (Antiquities and P90 respectively). Sometimes, the Hamer sneaks in or the tele sneaks in, but this is why I sold the R7 I had. Never played it, would rather have more amps.

Just finding a footprint in the old music room on where to put the next amp, that's hte challenge. Puckboy is right, hiding guitars is insanely easy.

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

The counter-argument would be that it's easier to enjoy a variety of guitars without bothering your spouse/kids/neighbors.

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

Space to keep amps is definitely an issue, but one way around that is to just sell'em and buy new ones.....the ones you can bear to part with. I've got 3 amps I really don't ever want to sell, but all the rest are in the paper now, ready to sell. As soon as they're gone, it's amp shopping time again!!!

You need a Franklin 15 1x12. ;)

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

I totally agree... I need to buy more amps...

lemme see.... i really want a Soldano SLO-100 or a Laney VH100R or a Peavey 6505... maybe a Krankenstein...

there are so many to choose from!!!

Unlike guitars, you CAN use all your amps at once.

One time, I linked up all the amps that were in my rehearsal space, which was from 3 bands. It was 2 Bogners, a Marshall, a Mesa, and a Fender Twin. I turned all of them up, and the hum was almost intimidating. It made the 'Back to the Future' scene look like a joke!! I was almost too scared to hit a chord, so I walked out into the hallway, shut the door, then hit a big open E.
My friends and I were laughing because it was just SILLY LOUD!!! The floor and all the walls vibrated......If I were standing in the room with no earplugs, it would have fried my eardrums in one shot! :yell: :fing2: :headbang: :haha: :firing:

Reminds me of one time when I did the same thing to the entire stack wall of my shop on a saturday.... 12 4x12s powered by 12 heads, none up more than , like, 3.... I´d say about 85dB ground hum@10 feet....

I wasn´t as timid, because it was my shop, but suffice to say a cheap Johnson strat lost it´s life that day (probably wasn´t in the wall hanger right, fell right out) :laugh2:

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

After as many years as I've had chasing an evolving sound I've grown weary of alot of what's touted in guitars. The holy wars of the major brands and the almost wholly unruly pricing that some companies have put in place for brand new instruments just has left a bad taste in my mouth. I almost prefer entirely to buy used from overseas.

But amps...I could own more. They just speak to me more than a few farmiliar guitars I own do. They just DO more than them. After you change pickups X number of times and set the action and split the coils...it's just the guitar. But amps....plug a guitar into two amps and you're talking total polar opposites of tone.

I'm estimating in a few years I'll probably end up paring down both the number of guitars I own as well as amps to maybe 3 or 4 of each. It's been a fun run of the excesses, but eventually it has to end.

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

I've always said this: the tone difference between two amps will almost always be greater than that between two guitars.

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

Its okay for people that are over 18 with some cash, but I'm only young and i just spent $2000 (AUD) ordering a godin signature LG. And i get to play it on my $50 practise amp, oh goody. I need to find something that has a dark sound and has decent volume for small gigs and for a price of $600 AUD max! I haven't found anything yet.:smack:

Re: Lotsa Amps is better than Lotsa Guitars!!!

I think probably 2 amps at most would be best for me, cause I just roll down the volume on my guitar for cleans. My strat and a les paul, my next guitar is going to be plenty enough for me for a long time. I'll probably just stick with the amp I got right now, it does all the kinds of music I play anyways. Two guitars should be good enough for me as both are complete opposites tonewise.
