loudness for speakers...sensitivity or power?

THe title of the thread pretty much says it all. I love a nice clean tone all the way up, the volume control, but I know loudness also has a lot to do with speaker sensitivity. What do you look for when you want a nice, loud, clean sound?

EVM as long as you don't have any back problems.

Peavey Scorpions = Very Clean Speakers :amish:

all the above and more; Gauss, Cerwin Vega, Weber Californias or Michigans. Prolly the single best thing you can do for most amps to get a bigger clean sound...

An amp with lots of clean headroom (lots of wattage), and speakers with alot of power handling (less speaker breakup).

Using sensitive speakers (like a Vintage 30) is like giving your amp an extra bump in wattage....

I don't care about sensitivity or power- I go for TONE.
The PA can make it as loud as it needs to be.

To get a bit technical about it the loudness (or volume) you hear depends on 2 things - the amount of power you put into the speaker, and its sensitivity (efficiency). Sensitivity is usually stated as how many dB it puts out for a fixed power input at a certain distance (like 1 watt @ 1 meter).

If you're looking for cleaner sounds, a higher sensitivity speaker might help, because you won't need to turn up the amp as much to get the same volume (reducing amplifier distortion). A higher power speaker will also help, since it won't break up as much if amp power stays the same (reducing speaker distortion). For example, a 200 watt EVM-12L won't break up at all with a 50-watt amp, whereas a 30-watt G12H30 would be pushed past "breakup" into "blown to bits".

So, the ultimate clean would be a high-sensitivity speaker with high power capacity. Like the others have said, look into the Weber Michigan & California lines, unless you want to muck around with the used & vintage EV's and JBLs.
