LOVE KT77's in the JSX

i bought a set of KT77's, because i thought i had blown out one of my 6L6's. (it ended up being a bad PI tube.)

Compared to the 6L6's, the KT77's are tighter and more percussive on the bottom end without being so boomy. so the ultra channel is better for metal than before.

i did notice a bump in treble, but a pleasant one. not harsh.

maybe the 6L6's were getting old. i really don't know how many hours were on them, since they came with the amp.

i haven't cranked it yet, so these impressions were at a volume that only moderately pissed off the wife.... maybe slightly higher than comfortable bedroom volume.

i can't really say, because i have almost no experience with EL34's in anything. but i hear they're a good mix of 6L6's and EL34's. i WAS going to try E34L's, but eurotubes said they see component failures in this amp family when using those.... that's the last thing i need.

I know some of the old XXX's didn't have screen grid resistors that could handle E34L's. I thought that was worked out before the JSX was released. Maybe eurotubes is speaking of something else though. anyways, From what you've described the KT77's sound like they would be awesome in that amp!

the difference is a lot more apparent with the ultra channel for sure. It just seems more edgy and responsive to percussive picking. since i loved the way the crunch channel sounded already, i just cut a little bit of treble and rock'd on.

Did they say which components? I don't know about the JSX, but I know in earlier Peaveys they used 4001 rectifier diodes, which is the reason my VTM 120 is as dead as a door nail at the moment.

Screen grid resistors. Early XXX's and very few early JSX's had only a 700 rating, now they all have 1m rating.
EL34's are king in my JSX always have been. Tonnes of tight lowend, without that soft, boomy lowend from 6L6's. EL34's add better mids too than the amps natural mids. Lower them to 4/10 and play the amp with V30's, and look out!

Re: LOVE KT77's in the JSX

Now that you mention the screen resistors, I remember reading about that somewhere too. And I completely agree about EL-34s. I like a tight bottom end and a nice growl in the mids, so they're my favorite power tube. Eventually all of my bigger amps will have them.

I feel the need to buy an Orange Rockerverb 50 and throw a pair of these in it.

Re: LOVE KT77's in the JSX

So my perception of the 6L6's being dark and boomy in the JSX is accurate?

I think the dark top end may be because of circuit design, because there are plenty of 6L6 powered amps that have a nice sparkly top end. But there's no doubt that 6L6s have a big bottom end.
