what do you prefer? :)

i prefer mid action.

low action sucks cause it makes it harder to dig into your bends and also if i want to do a Vai floyd rose thing where i pull it far back, the low action gets in the way and it stops the vibration.
and of course, high action sucks too cause it's just too high and gets tiresome when playing!

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

tiresome? ROFL! it's where the whomp comes from.
i dont think i met anyone that has as high an action than me. it's 4mm at the e and 4.5 at the E strings at the 12th fret
i got 0 problems playing fast lines and the bends are just insano.
you're just spoiling your hands with low action.. but i do like it lower on tremolo equipped guitars. hardtails should be flyin high

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

high ;)

comes from playing acoustics mainly, come to play an electric with low action and thin strings it feels like a toy.

but i dont go insanely high.

mines somewhere between 3mm and 4mm, im too blind to see where abouts :laugh2:

only thing thats awkward with such high tension is some sweep picking on higher strings, but i hardly ever do that so its not so much of a loss

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

Low! I can easilly do bends dude and I have sustain for days, I just sold my Floyd guitar as well and I don't like Floyds very much. I hate sweep picking with high action as well. I do very much like riffing with high action guitars, especially Speed Metal licks

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

theres no question-mid action. no buzz on bends, ease for playing, and good feel for the guitar. I have skinny ass fingers though, gotta start working them out!

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

Low-Mid. Low enough to shred and sweep, high enough to bend.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

Low enough to play comfortably, but high enough to play the occasional slide lick with.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

i have all of mine but one set to about a med action. the one that is not at med is higher for some slide licks.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

I like it mid-high. I play with a very heavy hand and I don't like to hear buzz when I smack the strings.

I don't measure my action so I can't tell you just how high it is (I do my own setups).

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

Low action with a scalloped neck, a shredder's paradise! :)

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

I like mid-low or mid action. Too low and the guitar feels like a toy, there's not a whole lot of control under the fingers. Too high and my lines are slower, my hands get fatigued quicker and I don't enjoy it as much. If setup properly, there shouldn't be any buzzing whatsoever and I get the "whomp" from my amplifier, not my strings. High action feels fine on an acoustic or a jazz guitar, but I wouldn't use it for anything else.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

I prefer it low, but not ultra Low. about 1.1 mm in treble and 1.2 on Bass. Any lower and I can´t attack the strings like I sometimes need to without buzzing, any higher and some of the faster lines get pretty tough ;)

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

Low, but that's because I'm spoiled by fret leveling and professional setups. If you have low action without both of those, your guitar won't sustain properly. But once you play on a professionally set up guitar with totally level frets, you'll never go back.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

mid, when action gets to low, i find that i rubb strings a lot....

Lowest action possible without buzzing. Scalloped frets let you dig in. I don't like to work too hard.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

i played my teacher strat today and it had probably perfect action!!!
and i got to play it the whole lesson too

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

I voted high action. But the disclaimer is I like to feel my instruments but I can play those fast lines with ease. I don't know why folks think that you can't play fast or shred with high action. You can, it just takes a bit of getting used to. I prefer high as I really love to bend and vibrato as well as play fast. It doesn't hinder my speed any, at least I don't think so.

I don't think it is that you can't play fast with high action- for me, though I just don't like to have to fight my guitar. I don't bend strings much, but a scalloped board helps with that as well as vibrato..I have a very light touch as well. Action really is a personal thing, though.
