Re: low action or high action or mid action..

Low action on my Strats. I use jumbo frets, so there's still plenty of room to dig in.

Med action on my LP. I tried to get it lower, but it just sounded aweful.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

I think I keep it on the mid side of things. I founs that if the strings are just a little bit higher off the fretboard then the notes can "sing" a little bit more. Speed is not an issue as I have gotten used to it.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

i like a medium high action, gotta be able to hit a couple slide licks every once in awhile and im trying to play more without a pick at the moment so a higher action is a nice thing, you can really dig in

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

what kinda action do you guys think john petrucci uses?

looks liek it might be low, but i haven't seen his guitar up close.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

I think it really depends on how you play, and what type of music you play.

Low Action: Pros, you can play very fast with less fatigue. Cons: It is difficult to bend effectively

HIGH Action: Pros, Excepional note clarity & Better sustain, Bend as hard as you like. Cons: cosiderably harder on your hands, and much more difficult to play fast.

For Me I like higher action. I play a lot of acoustic guitar as well as electric. Because of this I use 11's on electric with action set at slightly higher than 3/32" at the twelfth fret. On acoustics a liitle higher and I use 13's.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

i dont really have problems with high action either
i can play just as well on my acoustic(just wihtout the bending)
if i want to play fast on the acoustic thn i can

im thinking ofn trying out different heights on one of my guitars, see what i like best.
whats a good height for medium with 9-46 gauge strings?

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

Somewhere in the middle. High enough that I can hold bends without the strings slipping out from under my fingers.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

Wether the action is low or high really makes no difference in how hard the strings are to bend for me... its the fret size that makes that difference for me. I don't like the frets on LP standards at ALL because they're too low for me and too hard to bend. Same with the Clapton strat... great neck but the frets are much too small. Warmoth 6105 or taller is what i need.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

mid/high, i like to be able to really dig in without any stoopid buzzing. everythingds gotta ring clear, all the way up.

the EBMM signature i played was set mid action. about 2-2.5mm maybe a tad lower not too sure, i really wasnt impressed with the axe. but i can say that for just about any music man i've played. they feel wrong somehow, so i didnt spend too much time playing it.

Re: low action or high action or mid action..

i keep my action soo low, that if i overestimate my 1/2 step bends the string "frets out" (does that make sense? lol) some few frets up :laugh2:

UNLESS it is a Les Paul. 1/4" off the 12th fret then :D

I voted high action. But the disclaimer is I like to feel my instruments but I can play those fast lines with ease. I don't know why folks think that you can't play fast or shred with high action. You can, it just takes a bit of getting used to. I prefer high as I really love to bend and vibrato as well as play fast. It doesn't hinder my speed any, at least I don't think so.

+1

But! I did place a vote for mid action. I will push for high at times so as not to sacrifice the integrity of the instrument's tone, sustain, and projection. (i.e., bass guitars, acoustics..... and scalloped electrics :laugh2: :burnout: )

You gotta work it.
