lower power tube amps

Re: lower power tube amps

As a total cheapo trying to get tube tone, I bought the valve junior, I'm not impressed at all with it. I'm looking for a good pedal to put in front of it, if that doesn't work it'll become a dust collector.

Yeah, I played one a while ago, and I thought it had it's own ratty thing going on, but I'd imagine there would be a lot of first-time amp buyers expecting something quite different to what it delivers.

Apparently the Mercury magnetics transformer upgrade works wonders, though it does add to the price tag considerably.

Re: lower power tube amps

the valvetronix is at my bands rehersal space so thats outta the question. My budget is $300 max.

I'm kind of in the same boat, in that my various tube amps are at rehearsal spaces and studios. But I'm thinking of getting a small valvetronix for home playing rather than a small tube amp. Maybe you should spend as little as possible on a small s/h valvetronix, line6 or roland cube combo for home, and save the extra cash for a nicer tube amp later...

Re: lower power tube amps

I have the peavey royal 8 and it is a great amp. It is 5 watts w/ an 8" speaker. It is good for quiet playing (can be as quiet as an acoustic) but it can also get some good folume too (at max. settings it is about as loud as a fender hot rod on 2 or 3)

Re: lower power tube amps

zvex nano amp if you want really low wattage. it's 1/2 watt. see the little bugger sitting on top of my orange 2x12 in my avatar. but for my purposes the 1/2 watt going thru the orange still compelled me to buy a hotplate! yea, a heck of a lot louder than you'd think. not enough to play over a band but loud enough that if you cranked it the person in the next room would hear it. the zvex does tube saturated distortion very very well. think classic rock tones. the cleans are good too but not it's forte. a bit out of your range at around $400 though. zvex.com for sound clips.

i've heard good things about the epi valve jr, though the reviews here seem mixed. if you want a bedroom amp you can crank, 5 watts will likely be too loud.

the matamp minimat looks amazing. and build in attenuator. probably a long wait for one of those and it's priced around $700. the orange tiny terror looks terrific.

Re: lower power tube amps

I've never played a Valve Jr but I have tried a Matamp Minimat (both the 6L6 and EL84 version) and both are great little recording/practise amps for the money (about £259, all hand made and can be customised).

There is also another Matamp out now for £300 and it has a proper eq section and not just a TONE control, I would think THAT'S the one to go for!! All the best.

Yup, it's called a 'Little Rock' :D

I tried 1 out a month ago at the Matamp factory and ordered 1 on the spot :)

I tried it through 12 different 1x12 speaker cabs, each with a different speaker, and also through a stack of 2 undersized 4x12 cabs. That amp kicked some serious butt. It also took pedals very well, so I think I'll get alot of use out of it.

I also tried a Tiny Terror for a while and wasn't impressed with it to be honest. I was using it into a Marshall 4x12 cab, with volume more or less full up, so I know it wasn't because the valves weren't cookin'.

It sounded ok for Fuzzier sounding overdrive sounds, but aside from that, there wasn't an awful lot more to it.

For the £300 I spent on the Matamp, I think I made the right choice :)
