LP pickup recommedations

Re: LP pickup recommedations

why assume the 498T/490R is less? It's my fav Gibson set.

Not one of Gibson's finest moments. There's definitely players who can't get an amp EQ to work well for both of those PU's. The solution for some is to only use one of the PU's.

Re: LP pickup recommedations

The 490R/490T set was my most hated Gibson set. Bright, screechy, and no personality at all.

Gibson's put those in a assortment of guitars over the years, including some pretty expensive ones. To me, they're pretty lackluster.

Re: LP pickup recommedations

To be honest, I havent had many problems with the regular 490r/498t set

if the pickups you have aren't giving you any problems, maybe just start with that wiring kit and see where that puts you.

after that, make certain you've run through the other options (cables, pedals, amp, cabs, speakers).

Re: LP pickup recommedations

I just swapped a 490/498 pair in a studio with Whole lotta humbuckers. Absolutely transformed. In fact, I would probably make the WLH set stock if I were in charge of a guitar company. I love the Seths in my other lp, but they give me a very distinctive, vintage sound. The WLH is, for me, the perfect "does it all" set: cleans are great, lots of harmonics when driven.

Yeah, they should have called the set: WLH- Whole Lotta Happiness!! I love mine!

Re: LP pickup recommedations

I have 59s in both my SG and Les Paul. I did have a muddy neck in my other Les Paul so I switched it to a Jazz single conductor and they are just perfect for me.

Re: LP pickup recommedations

59's or WLH's.....

To me the WLH set sounds like a perfectly tweaked 59 set. I've got some in one of my L.P.'s & I love them!!! Great pickups for a "Mid Focused" guitar IMHO!!!

The 490r SUCKS. For a neck pickup, it lacks bass. Mine has this weird grittiness to it when I'm using overdrive. It's infuriating.

Re: LP pickup recommedations

Thanks for all the replies. Ive been doing a lot of reading here and elsewhere and I think Im going to try a 59 in the neck and a slightly hotter bridge pickup. Is there anything that would pair in terms of output, is bright tonally but gets fat with the tone rolled down?

Re: LP pickup recommedations

Vintage output for the neck, medium or high output for the bridge, and triple shots and you'll have more tone than you know what to do with.

Re: LP pickup recommedations

Ace is correct: the 59/Custom Hybrid is the one to pair with the 59. It gets tubbier with the tone rolled down, and with the volume down, it still sounds like a PAF.

Re: LP pickup recommedations

Perfect, thank you for all your help. Ill let you know when I get one and install it.
