mag question- rough vs smooth vs polished

Honeymoon is finally over with my les paul. Gonna try some mag swaps to get the 490t and 498r to play nicely together. I'm going to get an A8, A3, UOA5, and maybe some others to play with. My question is this: What is the difference, tone wise, between the rough, smooth and polished magnets? I know this has been covered many times, but can't find answers searching the forum. I could order one of everything, but then my cheap tweak becomes as expensive as new pups.

Re: mag question- rough vs smooth vs polished

Oriented - Almost always for A5, and (seems to be) always for A8. The 'grain' in the metal is aligned in one direction when the mag is formed, which makes for a stronger magnet.

Unoriented - Typically for A2, A3, and A4, and rarely A5. The 'grain' in the metal is random which gives a warmer, richer tone. More dynamics in a guitar PU.

Polished - Ground smooth and shiny. Almost all guitar bar magnets are polished. Gives a more uniformly-defined magnetic field, and a slightly sharper tone.

Unpolished - A4's and A8's are sometimes available unpolished, which means partially ground, but still has rough grinder marks. Tone-wise closer to a polished, but maybe a little more complex.

Roughcast - A2, A3, A4, and A5 are sometimes available as roughcast. Lumpy, bumpy, and still has sand indentations. Magnetic field isn't as uniform, and that makes guitar tones more complex and smoother on the high-end.

So, a polished A5 is bright and scooped; a RC A5 is smoother on top with a bit less treble, and an UOA5 is much warmer and fuller, closer to an A2.

A2, A3, and A4 are always unoriented; choose between polished, unpolished, or roughcast, depending on your desired tone.

With A8's you get polished or unpolished, the difference is small, but I prefer unpolished A8's.

We have a lot of magnet choices these days, and prices are low. Great time to tweak your tones and get just what you want.

Re: mag question- rough vs smooth vs polished

A number of players have a hard time getting the 498T/490R set to play nice together. The EQ's are just so different. I could never use those two together in their stock form. For the neck slot I'd recommend an A5 (sharp high end, scooped mids, lots of bass), A4 (balanced EQ), or A3 (fat mids, softer high end) to open it up and give more clarity and definition.

For the bridge, I use an A8 (warm, powerful, full mids) or an an UOA5 (lower output vintage sounding, similar to an a2 but with more high end).

Roughcast magnets have a smoother high end, and I use them on bridge PU's to take off any harshness. I prefer polished mags in the neck slot.

Re: mag question- rough vs smooth vs polished

Thank you very much for the info. I ordered a few to try out. Realistically, if I can get the flabbiness of the 490 or the thin/sharpness of the 498 reduced, I'd be happy. One eq setting for two pickups. But as usual I'm gonna tweak multiple variables at once. First thing I'll try is an A8 in the bridge and an A3 in the neck. Got a couple of A5s and a UOA5 ordered also. My expectation for this experiment is to bounce around between mag configs for a month and then chuck them all in my parts drawer and order some new duncans.

Re: mag question- rough vs smooth vs polished

If you can find a short A5 this also does wonders with the 490 pickup. A little less of an A5, so less highs and bass, and a bit more mids.
