had this pup for a while and popped it in my lp today. i like it, but i dont love it. im such an a2 bucker junkie the sharp a5 top end just aint gonna cut it. im assuming its a normal size bar? halp!

Since the 36th has the “air” tech, I’m not sure if it would respond to magnet swapping. I admit I have not tried it though.

if i have time after i do my taxes, ill find out. i think that they use a slightly smaller magnet with the air thing, so if i un-air it im hoping i can use a normal magnet.

clint, i dont have any a7. only a2, a3, a4, a5, uoa5, a8, and c8

I'm not sure if it's because of the air thing, but DiMarzio magnets tend to be a little narrower in the distance between the slugs and the keeper bar. At least that was my experience in trying to swap Magnets in a PAF Pro.

I think the good thing about the Airbucker thing is that you have some extra space to make it fit so that the pickup doesn't come back together all crooked like a regular DiMarzio with a Duncan/Gibson-sized magnet.

But I'm not sure how good an A2, 3, or 4 Air'd pickup would sound. My initial prediction that it would sound really weak, not just in output.

i know the paf pro and a few others have odd size magnets, but dunno about this pup. it wont happen today but itll happen soon. im planning on un-airing the pup with the mag swap as i mentioned. im a blues rock guy and this is replacing an antiquity which is lower wind and aged a2, so im not worried about it sounding weak. the antiquity is really nice, but i want like 10% more output and thickness. again, i had the pup for a while so this is an experiment

Gotcha. Let us know how it goes. I've always felt the 36th Annis would sound better un-Air'd. But I would go for A5 myself.

Get it together and order A6, A7, and A9.

i dont think i have any use for a9, i dont really care for a8 most of the time either. hell, even a5 doesnt usually do it for me. i want a round, soft, but clear top end, and big mids. thats almost always a2. though i do like a3 and a4 in the right pup. uoa5 is fine sometimes, but it still has the sharper high end of a5 that i dont always want. im playing blues/rock through vintage fender amps that are plenty bright on their own.

what is a6 or a7 or a9 going to get me?

A6 would be useful for you then. It has exactly that of a round, soft, but clear top end. It has soft mids like A2 and A3 but less. And it responds like A5 since it's oriented. A good option.

A9 is aggressive. It's like A5 but with upper mids. Too grating in the bridge for me. I like it in the neck for max bite. Dunno if it would be of use to you.

A7 I haven't tried. I'm just trying to live vicariously through you.

ive thought about a6, and i should try it, not sure ill love it. a9 isnt anything i want. im curious about a7 but havent ever heard one that i know of

finally got this done. pulled the stock magnet and the spacers, put a normal size a2 bar in and it fit fine. ill give it a whirl at the gig tonight to see how it sounds

i really liked it! it was one gig so we shall see if its just a honeymoon phase, but so far so good!
