magnet strength question

Re: magnet strength question

On the three strings you had it under, it would be noticeably beefier. Under the other three strings, obviously kind of weak.

Re: magnet strength question

i think i phrased that wrong.

Length=Perpendicular with the strings

Width= parallel with the strings.

Re: magnet strength question

Don't know about strength but the shape of the magnetic field would be different which would likely affect the tone and pickup output somewhat.

Re: magnet strength question

If I understand you correctly, it would probably a touch louder but brighter because the magnetic field would be more narrow and it wouldn't see the longer low freq's as well.

Re: magnet strength question

... the magnetic field would be smaller but stronger, This would produce less super low end but a tighter bass response overall. The highs would be brighter with an extended presence ... all this while retaining the same mids.

I haven't tested myself, but this makes sense.

I forgot to ask, is this a single coil or humbucker?

Dont want to hijack the thread, but what would be the difference between a short PAF sized mag and a degausse longer one?

Humbucker, i am trying to think of a way to have 2 different magnets in a single humbucker. one for each coil. What about the metal spacers that go around the screw coil. wouldnt this expand the magnetic field? I am thinking of 2 humbuckers one with A2/A5 and the other with A5/A8. It is for a project i am doing. I figure with the A2/A5 combo it would have the boosted mids on one coil, while the other one is scooped with tighter bass. making them it a pretty balanced pickup. Each coil would be wound to the resitance at which each magnet would perform the best, making it drip with character.
Not to mention the Coil split posibilites

Re: magnet strength question

I'm going to go out in a limb and suggest that you will probably just get the effect of the stronger magnet coming across most. Because alnico conducts the field just as the pole pieces do, the A2 magnet for example will spread the field of the A5 coil even if they're not touching (the field wraps around the coil in loops, coming back to the origin). It's like the slug poles on a humbucker which are not magnetic but conduct he field up toward the string. The A2 side will do that too to some extent and it will not be imparting its own sound all that much because it's weaker to begin with. I have some A5 half width, double thick magnets (but full length) but I notice they're seemingly weak compared to regular humbucker magnets. Now that's not to say that it won't work, I'm just skeptical and I need to wait for the right project to test these on. Somebody ordered a large batch from Allstar Magnetics to replace ceramic mags on cheap single coils which use non-magnetic slug poles. HE had more than he needed so I bought up a bunch from ebay :) They're 1/4 " square in cross-section.

Re: magnet strength question

i think there might be a why to combat as much interfiercence. Couldnt your put the magnets on the outside of the coils since they are the correct size? kinda like an invader has 3 mags, just in this case no middle one. either way i think i would be kinda cool to have one coil mostly one character with a bit of the other, what do u think?

Re: magnet strength question

I think that would maximize the effect you're after, but no guarantee that the short magnets will be strong enough. But heck, I'm all about experimentation. You have nothing to lose but time! Go for it man! :19:

now that i think of it is there anyway you could "hook a brotha up" with a 2 of those magnets, i would like my bluesbucker to have a little more life, and im not a huge fan of the ceramics. on that pickup im not worried at all about drop in output, the pickup is about 1mm above the pickguard. :D please lol
