Magnet swap in a Low Output pickup.

Re: Magnet swap in a Low Output pickup.

Ok. Now give it two or three days for the new magnetic circuit to stabilize (lesser powerful mags take longer to stabilize, fx. up to a whole month for an A3

This has me rather concerned about all that magnet swapping I did :15:

Common rookie mistake... plus, there are many people that don't even believe on this phenomena, so don't too hard on yourself.

You know, there's always time to do it over, and this time do it right! :cool2:

Yours very truly,

Ah well, such is life an' all that, though probably explains why I was constantly thinking the differences were all very subtle!

The 490/498 pair were in a new guitar, but destined to be pulled, and sold along with my double-neck (hence deciding to do all the faffin' about), so highly unlikely I'll do it all again if it takes that sort of time for things to settle :34:

Ok, Pepe (LtKojack)

It's been a few days with the A5 rough cast in it, and yes, it did get better with a few days to acclimate to the pickup, I'm going to let it sit a few more days, but I do have a confession to make, Forgive me for I have sinned... I went ahead and ordered a Duncan '59 just in case this David Allen is not what I want by this weekend, I know that's the easy way out, but that's what I have in all my other guitars (except the P-90). That's the newest update, nothing has really changed except a cop out pickup on the sidelines... Does it help that I got a great deal on the Duncan??

HTH/PePe..

I let the AV time to acclimate, it did get closer ( for those out there that think magnets swaps wii change a pickup immediately, you have two long weeks going with each magnet)

I settled, I went with a Duncan '59 and a put a rough cast AV and I relic'ed a cover. I'm not sold..... for the first time the '59 didn't sound the same... I have a lot of height adjustments to do, but, for someone this will sound contradictory ..Wow! Knock you socks off ... the Alley Cat with the rough cast AV is it!

Anyone interested in a hot rod Alley Cat PM me.

Thanks for all your advice,
I have no idea if this pickup will stay now....

Cheers for the holidays.

Cheers to you!

Glad the Roughcast A5 in the 59b worked out for you.

It's worked out for me as well. Got 'em in three of my five humbucker guitars.

I was after a very specific tone though: Clapton's live sound with Cream in 1968.

My favorite soloing tone of all time:

Some people like the current 59 with the current polished A5. But it sounds so much better with the magnet Duncan (and Gibson) originally put in it: a Roughcast A5.

I've never thought of it as being a 59 PAF though. More like an early 60's Gibson humbucker.

Duncan ought to put the roughcast A5 back in it when they sell the 59 as a set. They already call the 59 set the Blues Set. Put the Roughcast A5 back in and call that set the Blues Set.

And the polished A5 59 the 59.

The only reason I've posted so much about this is that at one time (20 or 30 years ago) the 59 was my favorite pickup.

It still is...but now only with a swap back to the original roughcast A5 magnet.

But again: I'm after a very specific sound. Early 60's Gibson. BB King, Eric Clapton, Elvin Bishop, Freddie King...and so many great players from Detroit where I grew up in the 60's. All the guys who played early 60's Gibsons.

Ok. So I thought taking the cover off of my 59n was going to be the hard part. I can't get the magnet to slide out!

How hard should I be pushing and will it come out either way?

Re: Magnet swap in a Low Output pickup.

Hello,
I used to only use A4's at some point. Then I tried everything else, they all had a good sound, some very close to each other. Never cared for the A2.
But after hearing Lt.K. talk about A8's, I tried one and man - did it sound big! I wanted my Seth Lover, a low wind pickup, so to speak, to sound more like my 59/custom, but did not want to pay for another one. The A8 made a big difference in sounding "Big".
Low end I moved lower down the p'up ring, and raised the poles. High end I moved it up a little, and leveled the pole with the slug, so the low end is tight and the high end is not an ice pick at all, top end is clean and clear, the bottom end is tight and not muddy at all. Except for the fact that the 59/Cust. is louder and the mismatched coils are a touch "grittier" - the Seth Lover with an A8 is a beautiful, versatile p'up that has real punch, and to me sounds very balanced when lowering the pickup in the ring about 4-5 mm, and raising the poles; while leaving the high E end of the p'up fairly close with the poles even with the slugs. Yes, open pickup, no cover. My 2 cents.

Re: Magnet swap in a Low Output pickup.

Make sure you loosen the little brass screws on the bottom of the plate, be sure the coils will move up easily,
not far. If there is too much wax, warm it up and get some of it out, or not, as I do not know if the 59 is wax potted or not.
You should push gently from the WIRE SIDE, so the mag will not hit anything on the way out. Wear some store bought OTC
+2.00 or +3.00 readers, get in close and make sure you are pushing in between, or on top or bottom, so the only thing you
are pushing on is the magnet. I use a very small flat head screwdriver, with a very small handle, so it is like micro-surgery.

Re: Magnet swap in a Low Output pickup.

I did get the magnet out and replaced it with an A4. I didn't think wax would hold it so tightly. So I ended up pretty much taking the bobbins all the way off and prying the magnet off. It was pretty sad. I even broke off the wire that connected to the baseplate. But now that it all put back together, nobody would know what I went through. It looks the same as before - and even though it's only been less than 12 hours, it sounds great! And next time l keep my hair dryer handy!

I was going to switch out my bridge magnet too but I'll do that another time, maybe after the holidays. I've asked Santa for some seafoam green paint. If I get it I'll switch the magnet (A5 to RCA5) while the guitar is apart.

Re: Magnet swap in a Low Output pickup.

Did you get around to try the A8 into that bridge p'up of yours?

I did, but in the end it didn't work well with my other guitars, I pretty much use the exact tone with all my guitars, From my Les Paul standard to my ES-335's, so I went with what I knew that if I broke a string I could still grab any guitar and go. I ended up back to my usual Duncan '59 with the magnet swapped to a long AV roughcast and an old naturally relice'd nickel cover. It just feels right... I sold the David Allen pretty quickly, and lucky to do so, as a lot of his stuff is on sale right now. I just have to realize I like my good old '59. they never let me down.

Thanks again
